For more than 30 years, Yogi Aaron has helped people become pain-free and discover their life purpose through yoga. He's the creator of Applied Yoga Anatomy + Muscle Activation™ (AYAMA™), host of the Stop Stretching podcast, author of Autobiography of a Naked Yogi, and co-owner of Blue Osa Yoga Retreat & Spa in Costa Rica, where he leads yoga teacher training immersions year-round for students from across the globe.

On the new channel he's teaching the yoga most teachers won't tell you about — why stretching can make your pain worse, why poses you've done for years may be shutting down the muscles that protect your spine, and what to do instead.

If something in your own practice still isn't working, that's where you'll find the answers.

Salabhasana, or, as I like to call it, Superman, is my go-to yoga pose for upper back pain relief. That’s because this pose is highly accessible to most people — and it feels incredible while supercharging back strength!

To practice this AYAMA technique:
Lie on your stomach and place your hands on your lower back.

Lift your legs into the air, then peel your head and chest off the ground.
Keep your legs as straight as possible, toes pointed.

Don’t worry about getting too high off your mat the first time.

Do this for six seconds six times.

Untwist Your Misconceptions: The Art of Safe and Effective Yoga Twists! ‍♂️

Hey yogis! Let's talk twists! These poses can feel amazing, but proper form is key.

Here's the truth bomb: Forcing a twist with your arms won't strengthen your core, it can actually weaken it! ❌

Focus on activating your core by lengthening your spine first. Then, gently twist as far as feels comfortable. (See the image for visual cues!)

Feeling challenged with straight legs? No worries! Cross your legs or sit on a chair, keeping your hips engaged. 🪑

Remember: It's all about feeling good in your body, not pushing your limits.

Ready to explore safe and effective twisting? Let's flow together! Drop a comment below and tell me your favorite twist pose.

You can flip the script on it.

The question is, do you want to?

Struggling with back stiffness and pain? There's hope! The quadruped pose (also known as bird dog) is a powerful tool to improve spinal stability and prevent future issues.

Why it works: Lifting the opposite arm and leg isometrically engages the multifidus, a key muscle for spinal stability. (It literally holds the spine together in place‼️)

My Story: This pose helped me avoid lower back surgery. It can help you too!

Modification for Beginners: Focus on lifting the back leg with a neutral spine if you're new or have balance issues.

(Check out my YouTube video on this pose - https://youtu.be/pJPiiwuqej8?si=9V94B...)

Key Points:

Ready to try it? Practice 4-5 times a week, holding for 6 seconds and alternating sides for 12 reps (total). Let me know in the comments how it feels!

Frozen shoulders?

Do you suffer from, or know someone who is suffering from frozen shoulders?

I recently had this question about frozen shoulders, and my response is below. (You can see the video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsPfo...)

Hi Yogi Aaron! Love love your work!! I have a student who has been diagnosed with a frozen shoulder. Which muscle activation work would you recommend I do with her please? 🙏🧘‍♀️💗 ~ Cindy

My response:

Thanks so much for leaving the comment and asking. Muscle tightness is a protective mechanism by the body to guard itself. A frozen shoulder is just that. Muscle activation can help speed up the healing exponentially. The goal is to get all of the supporting muscles working. I would personally have her start by doing my 7-day pain free series, which addresses the major supporting muscles. And see what happens after 1 or 2 weeks. And then start adding some of the muscle activations to get the major muscles of the shoulders working. One thing you definitely don't want to do is stretch or force that shoulder open. That will trigger the body to guard itself even more. Mobility will happen once the body has stability. Flexibility always leads to instability. And instability always leads to injury.
