Iโ€™m here visiting family with my mom, and I couldnโ€™t be more excited.

As some of you know, I was born in Brazil, and all of my extended family still lives here, so itโ€™s always such a joy to reconnect, catch up, and practice my Portuguese!

Of course, I packed my favorite health travel essentials: my 99% blue-blocking glasses and eye mask for better sleep, magnesium and vitamin C to stay regular and energized, a little silver for immune support, and even a few plug-in night lights (just in case our bed and breakfast has less-than-ideal lighting ๐Ÿ˜‰).

Iโ€™m soaking up the sunshine, delicious food, beautiful nature, and long conversations that always nourish the soul.

Taking a break from the darker days of winter with a bit of sunshine is one of my favorite mental health strategies when I can make it happen.

Anti-inflammatory pain medications like ibuprofen and naproxen can really harm your gut health. They are known to cause ulcers, bleeding and scarring within the gut, not to mention significant harm to your gut microbiome, and can even cause a leaky gut!

Since your gut health and your gut microbiome are key to your whole-body health, swapping these over the counter medications with gut safe supplements is an important step to achieving your best health.

Boswellia and turmeric when taken together have been proven in studies to have similar effects on pain as anti-inflammatory medications WITHOUT the gut damage.

Boswellia is extracted from a tree native to India and was originally used in Ayurveda medicine. Turmeric has also been used for centuries for its anti-inflammatory properties. When taken together they have been proven by modern science to be really effective in treating acute (e.g. menstrual period pain) and chronic (e.g. osteoarthritis, migraine, lower back) inflammatory pain!

Take Home Message:

Consider adding boswellia and turmeric to your toolbox if you find yourself occasionally or frequently needing to take anti-inflammatory medications for pain. Refer to this video for how to take these two supplements together.

๐Ÿ’คDeep sleep has been shown to reduce the risk of loss of memory from Alzheimer's Disease and dementia, and reduce all-cause mortality (death from ANY cause) by 40%!

Besides a healthy bedtime routine, there are supplements that have been shown to support quality sleep.ย 

Medications on the other hand often get you to fall asleep, however do not support the normal phases of sleep, including the rejuvenating non-REM phase of deep sleep. So you could be asleep but not repairing and healing!ย 

Here is a list of supplements that will help you fall into and stay in a healthy sleep mode.

โ˜‘๏ธ Magnesium L-Threonate is the kind of magnesium that is best absorbed into the brain and helps it calm down for sleep.
โ˜‘๏ธ L-Theanine is a calming amino acid found in green tea with calming effects that also helps the brain prepare for sleep.
โ˜‘๏ธ Valerian root has been shown in studies to be safe and effective for insomnia, especially when combined with other herbal formulations like passionflower.

These can all be taken together, on their own or in combination.ย 

Be a scientist and see what works best for you! If these are not effective enough check out the Melatonin Protocol. I try to keep melatonin as a last resort, since it is a hormone and can be harmful if used in excess or incorrectly!
