Copyright Strikes are back!

You've probably noticed that a few videos were taken down: a N64 video, a Wii video and a Zelda video. Nintendo strikes again (the strikes all came from Muso on behalf of NoA, which are probably seeking more Nintendo Music views). I'm guessing this channel probably won't last much longer, which is a bit of a surprise considering how low profile it is but as always, it all seems to be a bit random. I can't really complain, it was always part of the game and they've made it clear in recent years that copyright is a very serious business indeed. But don't be fooled: it's not about intellectual property. It's your money they're after, and they sure don't like to see you enjoy something for free when you could pay yet another subscription for it. Anyway, I can only encourage you go to my Patreon page where you will find all my vids downloadable for free. Mixcloud is still up but they started restricting a few vids as well on account of copyright issues. What a wonderful time we live in. I'll keep this channel alive as long as I can, but if they pull the plug on it I will probably just call it a day and move on to something else, probably still VGM related but as far away from big company greed as possible. We'll see.

A massive thanks to all of you for listening and for all the comments, feedback and advice! The VGM community never fails to impress me with how positive, generous and unassuming it is. Just a great bunch of gamers who just enjoy the music and want to share and talk about it the same way we used to back when we were in school. So thanks again, and hopefully this isn't the last of it.

Good news everyone!

I'm finally done with that NES project! I'm not gonna lie, it was a massive undertaking and I severly underestimated the time it would take to listen to the entire NES music library. And when I'm working on a relaxing playlist, it's a bit easier - it doesn't take long to see if the track is a good fit. But to spot good tracks, you have listen to the music carefully, sometimes more than once. And then you end up with a shortlist of about 800 tracks so not even half of them make the cut! My takeaway on the whole thing is that classic sountracks are classic for a reason and there aren't many deep cuts with the same quality. Konami was at the top of its game during the NES days. If the game has that sweet konami logo, you can bet the soundtrack is going to be a banger! Also Natsume. Nintendo, on the other hand... Many of the classic first wave games have very very basic music and it's not very interesting to listen to, honestly. In any case, the videos are all done and I'm going to do a bunch a smaller projects before I dig in the SNES library. Also there has been a re quest for a relaxing 3DS playlist and I'm very happy to oblige!

In other news, I'm back on Mixcloud:
https://www.mixcloud.com/Zabel_VGM/

I know some of you complained about me not using it anymore, and the truth is that Mixcloud pro isn't free and money was very tight for me last year. I do agree that its UI is a tad better than Patreon when it comes to listening to music, so I've added all the lastest mixes there. If you do want leave a little tip of something (which is awfully kind of you because you absolutely don't have to), consider using Patreon instead though. Mixcloud's cut is more important and Stripe has that retarded policy that if someone leaves a something, I can't withdraw it until the total reaches a £50 minimum, which can take years.

patreon.com/zabelvgm

Lastly, chapters seem to have disappeared forever from my vids and won't come back until I do an ID verification on Youtube, which will never happen. So yay, thanks Youtube! That and a whole bunch of features are now out of reach... But it will be a long time before I give YT a scan of my ID or my real phone number. Oh well.

Once again, thanks for you support, comments and feedback are always appreciated (seriously) and remember, I read all of your suggestions and I may be persuaded to take personal requests...

Hey everyone, Zabel here back with a little treat:
www.patreon.com/posts/vgm-megamix-vol-101968399

A few days ago I was browsing old VGM folders and stumbled upon this little gem: a VGM mix that I did in 2009, during the height of my radio days. The idea at the time was to create a mix similar to what I played during my shows for the listeners to play offline (basically because my live schedule was getting more and more irregular). It was mostly a similar format to what I'm doing now, 100 tracks organized sometimes thematically, sometimes musically, sometimes not organized at all, always ending with the Chrono Trigger ending theme (the closing credits of the show at the time). The only difference is that it plays as a continuous mix. You can tell I was really into DJs and stuff at the time. I remember considering adding a few scratches and stuff and I now regret deciding against it...
So anyway, I dig this up, give it a listen and what do you know, it still sounds pretty good today! Sure, my VGM musical horizons were more narrow in '09 than they are today and there are some transitions that only made sense to me at the time. Also when I say "mixed", it's a liberal use of the word. What seemed to me like bold transition moves are actually very light and sometimes even barely noticeable. I relied waaay to much on the same old tricks (looped fade-in intro on a track while the other track fades out way too quickly).
But honestly, the whole thing holds up pretty well. Not to blow my own horn but the track selection is really good, all favourites of mine. You'll recognize a lot of them, I suppose, but I was pleasantly reacquainted with songs I had completely forgotten about, like the Lost Eden main theme, that hilariously hectic Gyruss theme, that goddamn Pleather for Breakfast track that hits way too hard for its own good and the closing Wipeout 3 song that I was completely obsessing over at the time.
The whole thing sounds really fresh to me now, like you can tell this was done by a young guy really into VGM and not overthinking stuff like the 40yo version of himself would later do. The last 30 minutes of the mix go into full techno/electro mode, something the chill dude I am now would never dream to do.
This mix is available on Patreon for free (too many red-flagged tracks for Youtube, sadly). Please give it a listen and let me know what you think of it. Who knows, if it gets a positive welcome it may become a yearly tradition or something...

Hey everyone!
I have a few random announcements to share with you guys:

- First, I'm super grateful for all the positive feedback and comments the latest "relaxing..." playlists got from everyone here. Every single comment is read and makes all the work that goes into making these vids worth it a thousand times and more.
So what's next? Well, as I've said before, series-based mixes will continue, relaxing mixes will continue too (to a lesser extent) and I'm going to introduce a new type of mixes I've called "VGM Moods". I can't wait to share them with you, so stay tuned!

- If you are here, chances are you like music. I mean, not just video game music. I know I do, I'm a huge music nerd! Now I know we all listen to different stuff, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you have a thing for chill music. If you do, you're in luck: I've compiled a few playlists for you on Spotify!

The "Chill Beats" playlist is exactly what it sounds like. It features some of my favourite artists, like DJ Krush, Bonobo & Massive Attack, and many more.
open.spotify.com/playlist/3IlF22KcuMSWMtcNnK2CuR?s…

The "Jazzy Beats" playlist has more focus on, well, jazz. It's what many on YT call "lo-fi", although I dislike the name myself.
open.spotify.com/playlist/4VmmprApqRLSHBfYo05gAk?s…

The "Ambient Beats" playlist is much more abstract and darker. And more ambient. If you're into "space music" or "nature music", this one is for you. Perfect for camping, browsing google map or reading about space and stuff. Warning: lots of Boards of Canada music in there.
open.spotify.com/playlist/2iSm9TweedGXPxUHFXgs1i?s…

These playlists are already arranged for your convenience but feel free to hit that shuffle button!

Finally, I don't know about you but I love to read (and write, but that's another thing). And I love to listen to music while reading. If you're like me, here's my own personal reading music playlist. Randomizing it will be a mandatory step, though.
open.spotify.com/playlist/7ouxxgXu1sFrUixdImMmZe?s…

Feel free to browse the other playlists from there on but be warned: the other ones are my personal ones. Lots of wildly different stuff!

- Last but not least, I'd like to extend another thank you to those who support me on Patreon. There's a new playlist for you guys there: Relaxing Xeno Music, featuring Xenoblade, Xenogears and Xenosaga. More to come!

Hi everyone!

It's been a while since I last posted here, so it's time to share a few words and thoughts if you'll indulge me:

- I hope everyone's enjoying the latest Genesis/Megadrive playlists. Let me be honest here, I loved making them. I'm not sure why I put off working on a GEN/MD playlist for so long, and I'm not sure why I don't go back to GEN games as much as I do with SNES games. Alright, story time: I'm a Nintendo boy. My first system was the Gameboy (more on that later), then I had the NES and then the SNES. Never had any interest for Sega games... until a distant cousin visited us and gifted me a Megadrive with like 15 games: Space Harrier 2, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Herzog Zwei, Columns, Shinobi, Jordan vs. Bird (remember this game?) etc. My parents still figure he'd stolen it from someone but I couldn't care less. Imagine how I felt with so many games to play all of a sudden... So yeah, I love the Megadrive and perhaps because I don't really play those games anymore making this playlist was an intense nostalgia trip. It did take a looong time to compile though. There was close to a thousand soundtracks to sort through and I'll admit I wasn't always diligent (I played Yakuza Kenzan and Last of Us 2 while working on this playlist and clearly it didn't help). Anyway, here they are now: 2 Genesis/Megadrive playlist and a Sega CD one on top of that!

- The next "big" relaxing playlist will probably take a while to finish as well... so I'll make a bunch of shorter playlists in between to keep this channel alive a bit. First is an Amanita Design one. It probably comes from nowhere for some of you, it's not exactly retro but PLEASE give it a listen. You see, I absolutely LOVE this studio. They make these short point & click games that could easily be dismissed as quirky, childish or just plain weird. The truth is, these game are simply beautiful. They just ooze soul and atmosphere. The graphics are gorgeous and playing them feels like reading an illustrated book. Reading back on what I'm writing I realize I'm not doing them justice here: you must try them for yourself. Machinarium or Samorost 3 have my vote for newcomers. Suffice to say they made me fall in love with video games at a time when I was VERY disillusioned with the medium. And the soundtracks are still on my regular rotation. They're that good. If you enjoy Ninja Tune stuff (DJ Food, Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Skalpel...) Floex & Hidden Orchestra will be right up your alley. And DVA...well they're DVA, and I love their weird music! This playlist is one of my favourite yet. I realize it won't generate as many views as the others and half of these will be mine anyway, but that's precisely the point of this channel: not publishing playlists I WOULD listen to but the ones I ACTUALLY listen to. So far it seems to be working fairly well! Which brings me to the last point:

- Someone said I should make a GB playlist. And boy would I love making one... but it wouldn't be a relaxing playlist, that's not exactly the GB vibe. I've been toying with the idea of making "best of" compilations, the ones called "the sounds of..." are basically me testing the idea with my favourite game series. But, how about making some for whole systems? The best of SNES music, NES music, PS1 etc. I realize these playlists would perhaps feel more impersonal because, well, they are compilations of everyone's favourite music and they are already dozens of those, but what if I dig really deep once again and mix the classics along with underrated or unknown stuff? Would you listen to it? There's enough work for me for the next 5 years or so here... What do you think?

Enough of me rambling on. Thank you for your support once again! Thank you a thousand times for the comments, the subs, everything. And for you beautiful people supporting me on Patreon there are exclusive playlists coming your way. A "Relaxing Chrono Music" has already been gifted to some of you, in addition to the existing Final Fantasy and Mana/Seiken Densetsu ones. Enjoy!

Sup fellow VGM enthusiasts!
- After working for what seems like forever on "relaxing [insert retro system/series here] music" I really feel like doing something else for a while. I sorta want to do series-based playlists, like I did with Street Fighter a while ago and maybe that's the sort of thing you'd like to see as well. I've set up a poll to get a feel of the general vibes as to where to go from here, so let me think what you expect from this channel! If what you'd like to hear isn't on the poll, let me know in the comments.
- Regarding ads: the complaint about ads on the playlists are more and more frequent, and that really sucks. I just want to clarify: this channel is not monetized, and if it were up to me there you would zero ads. But some of the vids are copyright claimed (most of the time by weird random channels that probably do not even own the rights of the songs but are looking to make money off it anyway, I mean I've looked into some of them and I swear it's a freaking joke) and that means the copyright "owners" can decide to put ads and there's nothing I can do about it. Moreover YT itself can decide to put ads on a popular video that's not monetized, because why waste an opportunity to make a buck. I've disabled personalized ads, because that helps apparently, but I think that's the extent of what I can do (if you have more suggestion, I'm all ears). Seriously though, get an adblocker or play my vids on mixcloud. Fuck those ads to hell.
- Speaking of Mixcloud and Patreon, this is for those of you who followed me over there: the support I get is simply amazing, as well as humbling! Thank you guys so much! As a token of my appreciation I've worked on a 3-part 15 hours "Relaxing Final Fantasy Music" playlist especially for you guys. I don't mean to brag, but I think it's really good. Like, I know the material inside out and it allowed me to create a journey-like playlist through various musical landscapes (from forests to frozen lands, from dusk to dawn, from latin jazz to ambient etc.) I mean, I curated the hell out of this mix, it was a blast and I felt like I was on a roll. I've been listening to it almost every day for a week now, and I truly hope you'll enjoy it as well! :) Once again thank you!

- Don't forget to get on the halloween vibes with the Resident Evil or Silent Hill playlists! (pick your poison...)

Take care!

End of Summer Update

Hi everyone! Here's a quick update on what's going on with this channel.

- The strikes are lifted so this channel is in the clear again. That means I'm going to start uploading again. And speaking of which...
- The deleted videos are coming back! I've been reworking the PS1 and SNES playlists and they'll be back here expunged from almost all Square Enix content.
- There is some new content on the way!
- Some of you have reached out and offered to support me, which is an incredibly nice thing to do and for which I'm extremely grateful. Mixcloud allows tipping, so there's that, and I've set up a Patreon page which allows you access to the mp3 file of all my playlists, including the deleted ones. Of course you can still ignore all that and continue to enjoy the music for free, just knowing that you're enjoying these playlists is already plenty enough, trust me.

Once again, thank you for your support, you guys are an amazing community. Long live VGMs!

Important announcement: I've set up a Mixcloud account here -> www.mixcloud.com/Zabel_VGM/
You will find the deleted SNES & PS1 playlists there and all the other ones as well - including part 2 of the Mana compilation which I never had the chance to upload here!

I will continue to upload some of my copyright-friendly mixes on this channel of course, but I'm afraid the rest (like the upcoming PS2 playlist) will be Mixcloud-only, as this channel is already hanging by a thread as it is.

Once again, thank you for your support, you guys rule!

Square Enix Strikes Again
As you can see Squeenix took down half my vids - again. I have back ups of all the vids that were taken down but I'm not sure how to proceed yet. If you want to keep track of whatever will happen next if/when this channel goes away, join me on Twitter (twitter.com/ZabelVGM) and Discord (discord.gg/nAtBfYDJMw). In the meantime, I will find a way to upload the deleted vids somewhere else and I'll keep this channel alive by uploading more content as long as I can. And thanks for your support and your comments, which really mean a lot to me!
