The Greyboy Allstars

The Greyboy Allstars have been redefining the boundaries of jazz, funk, and soul since their formation in 1993. Known for their masterful musicianship and electric live performances, this quintet—Karl Denson (sax/flute), Robert Walter (keys), Elgin Park (guitar), Chris Stillwell (bass), and Aaron Redfield (drums)—are undisputed pioneers of the West Coast boogaloo revival. Their groundbreaking sound seamlessly blends funk, soul-jazz, and R&B with a modern edge, cementing their legendary status in the genre. GBA's debut album, West Coast Boogaloo (1994), is an enduring classic and a landmark in the modern funk movement. Featuring the legendary Fred Wesley—trombonist for James Brown and a cornerstone of the JB's—this album pairs GBAs’ youthful energy with Wesley’s timeless funk prowess. The collaboration elevated the record to iconic status, with standout tracks like “Soul Dream” and “Tenor Man” showcasing a rare chemistry that bridges old-school funk and contemporary jazz sensibilities.
