Half a page of Scribbled Lines

"Half a Page of Scribbled Lines" is where I make sense of a world that feels like it is in constant flux.

I started as a true believer in American Exceptionalism, but fifty years of traveling—first as a soldier, then as a mariner—changed everything. I realized that America isn’t the shining beacon on a hill we were told, and that most of the world is moving forward while we’re falling behind.

Here, I explore why some nations rise while others decline, using Rome as my guide, not as a story of one great fall, but as a series of cycles—populism, cynicism, collapse, and rebirth. My goal is to understand those cycles, and maybe help us break—or at least soften—the next one.
