Winchester 1893 Shotgun

Browning's slide action 12 gauge was designed with a linear breech block locked by the pivoting cartridge lifter. Overall it was a simple and effective design that could have lasted quite a while, except for two major faults. The first was that the shotgun was so simple that it lacked a means to open the action without depressing the firing pin. This was, at the time, a fairly common practice and simply thumbing the rear of the pin would be enough. Most people, however, seems to prefer dropping the hammer and when they slipped it was a problem. The second fault had more to do with the development of smokeless powder. Hangfires were common in early smokeless shotgun cartridges and rapid pumping meant out of battery detonations were common. Winchester's engineers would rework the 1893 to resolve these issues, ultimately developing the model 1897.

Austrian Mannlicher-Schönauer 1900

The "Mannlicher" rifle action, actually derived from the German Gewehr 1888, was paired with a rotary magazine developed by OEWG employee Otto Schönauer. This new rifle wasn't developed for a particular customer, rather it was an attempt to offer something that could compete with the growing popularity of the Mauser. A limited production series of sales samples were therefor produced beginning in 1900. The largest lot of these was for the Portuguese trials, though they ultimately went with the Vergueiro.

Mexican Obregón Pistol

This pistol designed by Alejandro Obregón borrows heavily from the Colt 1911 and it shows. However, it does not use the Browning tilting lock; this is a rotating barrel locked breach pistol. Obregón also combined the thumb safety and takedown into one assembly. Production was fairly limited and only carried out between 1934 and 1938 at the Mexican national armory. It was not adopted by the government.

British Webley-Fosbery 1901

Heading into the turn of the century, emerging autoloading pistol technology was buoyed by the development of smokeless powder. Soon armed forces around the world were debating on the merits of adopting these new and fiddly automatic pistols over the proven revolvers. Lt. Col. George Vincent Fosbery VC (1832-1907) sought to blend what he felt was the best feature of an automatic, the fact that each pull is a lighter single action, with the reliability of a revolver. P. Webley & Son of Birmingham took up the challenge with him and ultimately produced this unusual, recoil powered, top break revolver.

U.S. Colt 1905

Following repeated protests from the U.S. Cavalry, any hope of holding on to a small bore handgun was lost. The New Army wasn't well liked and Colt's 38 ACP wasn't going to win either. This meant the 1902 pistol had to be redesigned to handle a 45 caliber, which means this pistol is the one that introduced 45 ACP. An underside locking shoulder was added to handle the recoil and the gun overall was shortened up. This model entered full commercial production in anticipation of government adoption, but as we know that never came.

Austro-Hungarian Mannlicher 1895

Ferdinand Mannlicher's straight-pull, bolt action rifle designs ultimately led to this. His rapid loading enbloc clip system had carried over from the previous models but now paired with a fairly complex rotating, front locking bolt. These elegant long rifles are fairly light for their size, in addition to being narrow and well balanced. Sadly, however, they were also susceptible to fouling with debris and mud thanks to the open-bottomed magazines. The bolts could also become stiff and difficult to work if poorly maintained.

German Dreyse 1907 Pocket Pistol



This oddly shaped, blowback, .32 ACP was developed during the pocket pistol boom. Developed by Louis Schmeisser, it was produced by Rheinische Metallwaren und Maschinenfabrike of Sömmerda who had previously bought out the famous "Dreyse" company. They applied this well known name to the pistol in order to secure trust and sales. The Dreyse 1907 has a simple, flip up takedown feature and an unusual cocking bar projecting from the front of the breechblock and extending over the barrel. This provides an extended cocking surface while adding mass for the blowback operation and keeps that bulk in front of the breechblock for a shorter and more balanced action.
