8/8 Kashi Musings: The panchakroshi yatra ends at the confluences of Varuna and Ganga. The name Varanasi comes from the landmass between rivers Varuna and Assi. Sri Adikeshav Vishnu stands here to bless and fulfill all the prayers of the devotees on completion of their yatra.
The sanctum also houses the Keshav Aditya, one of the 12 Aditya (Sun) temples of Kashi. They are situated exactly in alignment with the 12 zodiacal transitions of the sun through the year.

For most who visit Kashi, Adikeshav Vishnu is less known and least visited. This is situated in Omkareshwar khand of Kashi. Omkareshwar, Madhmaheshwar and Kedareshwar are the three khands or zones which also represent the three points of Shiva’s Trishul on which Kashi is supposed to be standing on.

The last of the 56 Ganeshas, when one does the Chappan (56) Vinayak yatra, is also situated near the Adikeshav temple.
How auspicious it is for the pilgrims to be starting the panchakroshi yatra and ending it with one of the 56 Ganeshas of Kashi. They are situated in 7 concentric circles situated radiating in 8 cardinal directions.

Kashi 4/7: kotwal Bhairav- (kota pala - protector of a fort) - The Bhairav who guards the west of the Kashi kshetra.

Panchakroshi yatra is the most overlooked part of the usual Kashi yatra done. This is a 84 km (some say 75 km) path which circumambulates the whole Kashi kshetra. The description of Panchakroshi yatra comes in many scriptures, including the Kashi khand of the Skandapurana.

Since ancient times, people have been doing this padha yatra which takes 4-5 days. By car, it takes the entire day (depending upon how many of the temples you stop and how much time you spend in each.)

Almost midway of the yatra is this Bhairav sitting as the protector of this direction. There is a Trilingeshwar Mahadev, a group of three lingas adjacent to this Bhairav. There is also a Ramlingeshwar (as said by the local- so not sure) which was a high rise sanctum with shikara. The elder saw me shooting and handed me the key and said please go shoot Ramlingeshwar also!

We also spotted this little bhaktha in that lonely Bhairav shrine. She was arranging each flower and mala with such great care and devotion… so much attention that even my camera and shooting didn’t distract her. My hopes for the future rose as I observed her shraddha and actions.😍🙏🏽

Kashi Musings 3/7: This is the space where Agastyamuni established a linga and had an ashram with a kund. Kund is dry now and almost non-existent with encroachments. It is said that this place was so prominent during his times, that the whole area was called as Agastya kund. Today it is called Godowlia. Yes, you heard me right! The Godowlia chowk which leads to the Dasashwamedh Ghat is where this “Shri Agatyeshwar Mahadev temple” is located… closer to the Nattukottai Chathiram. That’s another interesting connection to the Nagarathar community.

This was the spot from where Agastyamuni’s journey towards south started. The most appropriate place for us also to shoot and eventually start our episodes from.

There is a new Agastya murthi established by somebody from Mumbai. There is also Devi Lopamudra murthi and shrine just behind the Agastyeshwar Mahadev linga. There are other deities around in the parikrama too.. overall a powerful space. Very few know about this place and it is obvious from the deserted looks. But very neatly maintained.🙏🏽. Please do visit the place the next time you are in Kashi.

Kashi Musings 2/7: Ganesha, Vinayaka, Vigneshwara… a thousand other names to him. 🙏🏽

In Kashi, Ganesha has a very strong kshetra or energy field through his 56 forms. Locally referred to as “Chappan Vinayak”, he has arranged himself in 7 concentric circles in 8 directions, in 56 specific points spread over the whole yantra nagari. Some like the Dehali Vinayak Temple are mentioned even in Ramayana as the point of entry into Kashi and spot of tapas for Ram and Sita.

Although I had came to know about the geometric Mandala formation during my previous visits, this time has been a different calling and access to Vinayakas in Kashi-thanks to @shreekumar.ji .

Now I perceive Ganesha as a live force with whom I can communicate and relate with - as a two-way process. Om Gam Ganapathaye Namaha🙏🏽🙇🏻‍♂️

Kashi musings 1/7 … 🙏🏽 Since 2010, I have come here innumerable times for various reasons.

The first trip was to make a documentary - which did happen in 2011. It is available on YouTube under the name “Kashi - the Eternal City”.

Since then, Kashi has enslaved me to make periodic visits, sometimes even beyond my own reasons and purposes.

This visit was also not planned.. actually I wanted to not travel anywhere and rest for a week before another trip. But Mahadev calls and you cannot not obey!!! Somebody graciously arranged the trip - and here I am.

Kashi is not about the places I visit. It’s an experience.. there is an inner beautiful experience. And an outer experience of noise, pollution, beauty, food and many other aspects.

Beyond all this lies a realm which is indescribable.

I have captured many videos during the last few trips. My challenge has always been to articulate it. Hope it manifests in the coming months. Har Har Mahadev!!!

A special pooja and homam was happening at the Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar temple in Malaysia…. And guess for whom? Maharishi Agasthya himself!!! Got to interview a Chinese and Tamilian born in Malaysia who were organising the special pooja.

Malaysia and Singapore have quite a lot of devotees / disciples of Agasthya muni. And it was an interesting connection between Ganesha and Agasthya Rishi.🙏🏽🙇🏻‍♂️.

Thanks to @soch.uva for taking me to this powerful space.

Urangapuli Periya Karuppanswamy in Rangiyam is the kuladevatha for many of the Nagarathar community in Karaikudi. Although the temple’s presiding devatha is Angala Parameshwari, PeriyaKaruppar and Chinna Karuppar are predominantly worshipped here. They are protectors and justice providers.

I happened to land at this temple under miraculous circumstances during my travels of shooting Karuppar and Agasthya places. And it so happened that it was their annual festivities for Karuppar. 75 goats were given bali and the oracle through whom Karuppar Swamy descended upon fiercely ran around and accepted the offerings. The oracle paused midway and gestured me to come closer. A shiver went through me🫣. He put a mala on me and blessed saying I am doing good work 🙏🏽🙇🏻‍♂️. That’s the selfie I took to see how startled I looked🥶.

It is indeed a blessing to be allowed to document this whole event and also witness the incredible energy of the space on that night. Thanks to @shreekumar.ji for opening up the dimension of Karuppar Swamy. I am looking forward to reading his recently released book on Sangili Karuppar: on Bhairava, Grama devatas and kshetrapalas. It is available now on Amazon.

Sri Dakshina kaalika Devi temple is situated near a forest 6 kms south of Sri Kalahasthi. With a Meru and a ashtabuja(8 hands) form, she is both fierce and compassionate at once. The naga kudumba in the temple premises seem to have a different story to tell. It was amazing to see people from all ages and different walks of life do rituals on their own at these spots around the temple.

As we spend more time with Agastyamuni in various places, he seem to be revealing his connection and presence in the Grama (village), vana (forest) and kula (community) devatas as well. Agastyamuni’s association with Shiva, Ram, Skanda was already known.

This powerful Kali temple was the first. From here we went to the Kalabhairav temple nearby, a linga and waterfall and Agastya linga in the forest, sahasralinga and many more exciting revelations. My deepest gratitude to Shri Ananda Prateeka ji from @behindeverytemple for taking me to these remote hidden powerful spaces. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 More about their significant works in subsequent posts!

Maa Kamakhya Devi. The less spoken about her, the better. Because she is beyond any logic and comprehension. The inner sanctum is powerful in a certain way and the outer parikrama and the surrounding space all reverberates differently with her energies. Definitely not a place for the faint hearted or tourists. A space I have been wanting to go for more than a decade. As they say, she decides when! I feel this is just a start of a long relationship with upcoming multiple visits. A Deepavali well spent.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🔥
