Gangaikonda cholapuram - Means the city established in commemoration of conquering the Ganga. King Rajendra Cholan-1 conquered major parts of Karnataka, Andhra, Orissa upto Bengal. The king is said to have ordered Ganga water to be transported in many pots to fill the well in this temple. This was completed around 1035 AD. Being the son of Rajaraja chola who built the Thanjavur temple, he shifted the capital to Gangaikonda cholapuram. It remained a glorious city for 250 years.
Standing there and walking around and inside, one can feel the sheer devotion, dedication and skills of people 1000 years ago.
Archeological survey shows an existence of a whole city established as per Agama tradition with thriving music, arts, dance, martial arts and weaponry etc. There are many mounds spread across a large area, which are remnants of many temples including Vishnu and Dharma Sastha temples. Only this temple withstood the destructive conquests of the Moghuls during 14-15th centuries. Later this was renovated and restored by the Vijayanagara kings.
It is located on a beautiful stretch of highway between Trichy and Thanjavur. A must visit to experience what human hands are capable of manifesting.. . . . #gangaikondacholapuram#shiva#temple#architecture
