First garden harvest or the year! This is a perenial broccoli rab from the Experimental Farm Network, I planted it last summer, and it did indeed overwinter and even came up before the dandelions!
This one was a win for me. If you want to try it, here's the link to seeds. Not affiliated in any way, I just grew and enjoyed this landrace. π
2025 garden season is officially underway with the first seedlings of the season! I grow cabbage every year... every year I read/watch how to make cabbage happy, and every year I grow mediocre cabbages π oh well, I keep trying because they are one of my favorites. What do you struggle with but still grow?
Pink pickled eggs π₯ π these are my youngest daughters favorite! Pickled eggs are actually pretty simple to make and a great way to preserve some of the abundance of spring eggs on the Homestead. Grab my recipe π https://youtu.be/HX3ZI9nFHP4 to make them pink just boil beets with some honey or sugar, and enough water to cover the beets. Use the beet "syrup" that results as the water componet in your brine.
Why would you want to make your own condiments? Well, if the ingredients lable didn't scare you, the companies behind the brands might π«£ www.facebook.com/share/v/1L89PyvsS6/
I still love the camp fire technique for resorting cast iron pans! I've used it many times since I originally shared in this video - https://youtu.be/Aqp_gXNgZ0g
How do you keep your chest freezers organized or deal with rotating your bulk food?
I cleaned out the shop freezer today, and now I'm making beef/pork sausages to make quick work of the last of the November 2023 beef that had gotten lost in the bottomless pit that is a chest freezer!
I got an email a while back about making a recipe book, and I asked what this viewer wanted to see in such a book. (This is not the first time I've been asked son its been on my radar.) He mentioned recipe conversions. Like how to take an old favorite and switch it up to be healthier, seed oil free, whole wheat or fresh milled grains, sourdough, lower sugar etc... this got me thinking maybe I should do a monthly live where I take on some questions and recipes! You guys could send in recipes or questions, and I could tweak the recipes to fit how I would make them for my family. I know a lot of you are seasoned pros in this department but I think we've got a good amount of folks in our midst who are just starting down this path and may also be interested in this. Anyway, let me know what you guys think! If there's enough interest, we will have to make a date and try it out!
It's pretty cold here in my corner of the world, 1f the last few mornings, but it's very sunny π which really boosts morale!
I'm also working steadily on putting together a sourdough bread course! Ive been talking about doing this for a long time but I'm actually prioritizing it and getting it done now π I'll be focusing on how to master the method not a recipe so you can learn to bake without needing a recipe at all if you want and will have confidence to adjust recipes to fit your needs! Does that sound like something you'd enjoy? Let me know!

Hi there βΊοΈ it's been a while, so here's a quick update! I am working on that tallow candle video. It's actually all done and ready to post, I'm just waiting for some copyright issues to be resolved. (The newer AI Β©οΈ scanners can be a total pain in the tush) I've got lots of ferments and food going as per usual. Pictured are lemon ginger honey, lamb sausage, cheese, and some seriously scrumptious blueberry scones made with home-grown flour corn!
