European Union in New Zealand

The European Union and New Zealand are close, like-minded partners, grounded in shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The EU–NZ Free Trade Agreement entered into force on 1 May 2024, supporting rules-based trade, green growth, and economic resilience, and has already boosted New Zealand exports to Europe by $2 billion.

New Zealand is the first global partner to Horizon Europe, the world’s largest research and innovation programme, enabling strong EU–NZ collaboration to tackle global challenges.

The EU and NZ stand with Ukraine and work closely together in the Pacific and Antarctica. Across trade, science, climate, security, and culture, the EU and NZ are building a modern partnership delivering real-world results for our people, economies, and planet.
