Building Citations Is the best form of link building in 2025

But everyone says why to do it (it gives you authority and this gives you a boost in being quoted by AI Mode in Google) yet, no one answers how to do it.

Where should I get the citations from? Was a recent questions I was asked on a !-1 consultation.

For me I've always found Whitespark is reliable. They're known for manual citation building (not just automated directory blasts). They research niche directories, check existing listings, fix inconsistencies, and submit to the authorative platforms.

But there are others that are also worthy of a mention.

Whitespark
Yelp
BrightLocal
Checkatrade
RatedPeople
MyBuilder
FreeIndex
Moz
Yell
Yext

You want to appear in as many relevant and trusted local directories as possible especially trade-specific ones. Whitespark or BrightLocal are top of my list for trust and results.

It's really not that confusing when you understand the new method to rank keywords. In this post I'm going to show you what to do, and all the tools I use to max out my rankings to get more sales and leads.

Do you need to use exact keywords for Google?

This question came up this morning with a plumber i was consulting with

Remember Google Understands Similar Words (a.k.a. Semantic Search)

Google no longer needs exact keyword matches to understand what a page is about.
Google can now understand context, intent, and related terms not just exact phrases.
So phrases like:
"Drain cleaner"
"Drain cleaning"
"Drainage unblocker"
Even "clearing a blocked drain"
…can all be understood as having the same meaning when someone searches for help with a blocked drain.

🔎 Why this matters:
You don’t need to stuff your content with the exact same keyword 15 times anymore. In fact, that can hurt you.
Instead:
Use natural variations of your keyword
Write in a way that helps a human, not just Google
Think about intent, what’s the person trying to solve? If you’ve ever felt like you’re drowning in this AI Mode stuff

As you may know "brand mentions" is so powerful, especially for AI Mode results.
Getting mentioned online is a brilliant way to build trust with Google and boost your local authority. Think of brand mentions as digital word-of-mouth and Google notices them.
You’ll need to think a bit outside the box or take inspiration from what others have done to get noticed.

But how do you get them? Try this list I recently made for a client...
👉 Local newspapers or online press
👉 Charity events where you can get coverage or be included in a press release
👉 Podcasts, videos, or local radio interviews where you share a useful tip or a success story
👉 Local blogs (especially “Top 10 plumbers in [your city]” style articles)
👉 Sponsoring a local football team or community event
👉 Answering questions in local Facebook groups or forums
👉 Press release distribution through services like EIN Presswire or BrightLocal

If you're paying for a mention, always ask:
“Will I get a link or a mention on your website or socials?”
If the answer is yes, it's often well worth the investment.
Brand mentions are all about showing Google you're part of the local conversation. If you’re sponsoring events, showing up in the news, or engaging in the community, you’re doing it right.
Think of it less like link-building and more like reputation-building.

“I’m the best!” I hear this on nearly every 1-to-1 call.

Sure, you might be the best, but Google doesn’t care what you say.

The reality: It cares what your customers say.
It looks at:

+ Reviews
+ Photos
+ Posts and recent activities
+ Location and trust signals

If 100 businesses are shouting “we’re #1,” Google has to rely on data to decide who actually is.

Have your Google Business Profile stats just plummeted in the last month, especially since the AI mode was released?

Relax. You’re not losing customers, you’re just losing vanity metrics.

Google’s new AI mode hides a ton of your views. So if you're tracking your views, it can look a little scary. But the leads you do get? They’re stronger. More phone calls. More ready-to-buy customers.

Search views are down, map views are steady, and the people who contact you are better qualified than ever.

So don’t panic.

Stop obsessing over the drop and double down on consistent optimisation. That’s what keeps you winning locally.

“Google hates my business” is a common belief.

If your rankings suddenly drop, it’s easy to think Google has it in for you.

The reality: It’s almost always something else:

1. A competitor made changes to your profile (yes, it happens!)
2. You’ve triggered a soft suspension and don’t know it
3. Or, you just haven’t checked your listing recently

Google isn’t sniping at you. But it will ignore you if you don’t monitor your profile regularly.

A simple check takes 60 seconds, while you're there, add a few little updates, and it can save you a ton of headaches.

Are Your Clicks Going Down?

Yes and that’s not a bad thing.

🔹 60% of Google searches are now Zero-Click
🔹 People get the answer before they even leave the search page
🔹 Website visits are fewer, but far more qualified
Google is doing the filtering for you.
It’s pushing ready-to-buy, ready-to-call customers to the businesses it trusts the most.
So the question is:
Is your Google profile ready to be trusted? Is it using a system to get powerful reviews?
I’ve dropped a lifeline below to my simple step by step system.

If you think NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) consistency is old news, think again.

This simple trio is still one of the fastest ways to build—or destroy—trust with Google. And most businesses? They’re quietly losing rankings over it without having a clue.

Here's the truth: Even with all this AI Mode hype, Google does not want to guess who you are. If your business details are scattered across the web with outdated phone numbers, mismatched names, or old addresses, Google hesitates.

And when Google hesitates, your competitor wins.

You might have the better service, the better offer, and the better reviews—but if your NAP isn’t consistent across your listings, you’re handing over rankings to someone else.

This stuff hides in plain sight. But the good news? It's fixable.

✅ Start by scanning your business listings.
✅ Then tighten your NAP like your ranking depends on it—because it does.

Ever heard how Velcro was invented?

A Swiss engineer took his dog for a walk… came back covered in burrs.

Most people would be annoyed.
He got curious.
Looked closer.
And ended up inventing Velcro — all from a problem he didn’t ask for.
That stuck with me.
Because a few years ago, I got a panicked message from a local window cleaner.
His Google Business Profile had been suspended.
No leads. No calls.
Just… gone.
I didn’t know it then — but that was my “Velcro moment.”
One disaster became five. And fixing them accidentally built something bigger — not just for him, but for dozens of business owners since.Just like that Swiss engineer and his dog —

Sometimes the burrs are the breakthrough.

What Your Google Profile Donut Says About Your Business?

If you’ve never clicked the little “Performance” icon in your Google Business Profile, you’re missing out.
Because that colourful donut chart isn’t just pretty — it’s a goldmine of marketing insight.

It tells you:
Where your customers find you (Search vs Maps)
How they find you (desktop vs mobile)
Which channel is your dominant one

This is crucial. Why? Because if most of your traffic comes from Google Search on desktop, you’d market differently than if 70% were finding you on Maps on mobile.

It’s not just data, it’s a direct view into how real customers are searching for you right now.

Here’s mine:
51% Google Search – desktop (blue)
30% Google Search – mobile (yellow)
12% Google Maps – desktop (green)
7% Google Maps – mobile (red)

Your mix will be different — and that’s the point.
The dominant colour in your donut should shape your marketing from this point forward.

So… what’s your dominant colour? Vote below.
