Yasmine Hamdan
Yasmine Hamdan first made waves in the music scene with the pioneering Beirut indie electronic duo Soapkills, which she co-founded with Zeid Hamdan in the late 1990s.
Having moved to Paris in 2005, Yasmine collaborated with Madonna producer Mirwais for the Y.A.S. project, releasing the sleeky clubby Arabology album on Universal in 2009.
Since then, she has earned international acclaim as a solo singer-songwriter and producer, elegantly entwining far-ranging elements, from pan-Arabic roots and pop and poetic lyrics, to electronica, soul and guitar melodies. Yasmine has collaborated with filmmakers such as Elia Suleiman, Jim Jarmusch, and has toured globally in support of her albums Ya Nass (2013) and Al Jamilat (2017).
Her third album 'I remember I forget بنسى وبتذكر' is out on Crammed Discs/ [PIAS].

It’s August 4th, 2020 at 6:08PM and I’m sitting in my apartment in Paris when I receive a call from my sister, one minute after the Beirut port explosion. In a few seconds, Beirut became smoke and haze. I was far, and I felt completely crushed.
« Hon » was the first song I wrote for my new album. The lyrics emerged from this experience, a fracture, an incapacity to distinguish between here and there.
I wrote the lyrics of Hon with the Palestinian Poet and friend Anais Alaili after August 4th, yet it seems inseparable with what we have been experiencing for the last year and a half. I composed it with my long time collaborator Marc Collin.

الرابع من آب ٢٠٢٠، الساعة ٦:٠٨.
جالسةٌ في شقّتي في باريس. تلقّيتُ اتّصالًا من أختي بعد دقيقة واحدة من انفجار مرفأ بيروت. في ثوانٍ، تحوّلت بيروت إلى ضبابٍ ودخان. أنا في مكان بعيد عن بيروت، أشعر أنَّي مسحوقةٌ بالكامل
من هذه التجربة تدفّقت كلمات أغنيتي هون
كما من شعوري بالكَسر والعجز عن التمييز بين هون وهونيك
هذا الشعور لا يبدو منفصلًا عمّا كُنّا نعيشه خلال السنة والنصف السابقة
هون كانت الأغنية الأولى التي كتبتُها لألبومي الجديد
