We were inspired to make a video that not only tried to capture the message, but also the aesthetic of this wonderful show.
Shot over several days and locations I really wanted to make this video feel episodical so we used drone shots, montages, heavy cinematic framing, voiceovers, poetry ( sort of ) weird slow motion dancing, night and day shots, heavy cuts, blended shots, multi-frames and whatever else we could thing of.
This project used very heavy story-boarding, so almost everything was considered and thought out before we filmed, rather than the usual "bloke talking to the camera" thing.
I love it, I think it feels like Severance, it looks like Severance and I have something to say about the far reaching ideas of Severance.
It may be my favourite video that we've ever made...
This is my attempt at a little profile / doc video about an authors life and works.
We filmed this in an abandonned train tunnel ( the same one used in the Alex Garland film, Men ) the same day we shot another video actually inside the tunnel. For this one we set up right by the entrance so we could use some natural light and textures. It was very cold and damp, H.P. would have loved it. For the opening sequence I edited hundreds of images of Lovecraft's face together to make a montage of misery, I think it works rather well.
I love Peter F. Hamilton's Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, in fact, I recorded videos about each of those books and got to meet Peter and discussed his work in person over scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.
But one chapter in particular affected me so much that I had to dedicate a whole video to just a few pages.
MorningLightMountain - The terrifying, murderous, alien hive mind.
This was my very first attempt at making a video entirely from stock footage and graphics. Just voiceover, sound mixing and editing, I should do it more.

The concept for this video is not to actually claim that Stephen King is the King of Sci-Fi but to shine a light on the science fiction books that he has given us, i don't think he gets enough credit for that. Am i allowed to say that i think i nailed the script and pacing? It's exactly what i wanted to achieve. The thumbnail is a conscious effort to try something new and bold, i love it and we have used the same style a few times since.
I had the brilliant idea to wait for a really rainy day and film the video in a forest, i thought the horrible weather would fit the mood of the video and add a dramatic element, which i think it does, but it was very uncomfortable and Charlie's camera started to fog up and have electrical issues (it's fine now) I'm really happy with the look, we made a point of setting up a completely separate shot for each section. The Long Walk b-roll didn't quite work out how we planned, the grand scheme was to set up the camera and shoot the two of us, dressed slightly differently every time, multiple times and then overlay all the shots to make it look like there were more people, but it didn't really work. I also had the idea of showing a walker gradually getting worn down until they collapsed on the floor and then get shot, but i was cold and miserable by the time it came to film it, but then Charlie took his top off in the freezing rain and played the part, i wasn't going to stop him.
FUNNY STORY - We filmed this in Wychwood Forest in The Cotswolds, i heard it was an ancient, haunted forest in the middle of nowhere, which is true, we had to park at a little train station and hike to the location in the pouring rain. 10 minutes down the road a car pulls up "Do you want a lift?", after a quick evaluation of the situation we accepted. You have to agree that this sounds like the opening scene of a slasher film, two idiot film makers are on their way to a haunted forest to shoot a video about Stephen King in the rain, and a mysterious guy called Damien picks them up. I thought the best strategy was to spell this out to Damien and i just asked him if he was planning on murdering us, he responded with a very theatrical, maniacal laugh but obviously did not kill us, instead he kept us alive and gave us his number and insisted he picked us up when we were done, what a legend.
