Awesome getting to reconnect and say hi to singer-songwriter Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon. This guy’s music made such a huge impact on me when I was starting out that still carries through today, and the live show still sounds as great as ever. Thanks Matt!
Super great finally getting to share the stage with bassist Sean Hurley last night at the Five For Fighting show in Dallas. You’ve heard his playing on countless hit records and seen him on the road with some pretty major artists, but most notably, and I’m positive a major highlight of his career, was his work on my 2009 album “Life as a Song” 😵💫 😝 But for real he’s one of the best there is. Awesome night. Thanks Sean.
So I wrote myself a letter in 8th grade (13 years old) with the explicit instructions to “open when you’re famous or when your first child’s in 8th grade.” I decided to finally open it for my birthday yesterday since my oldest is about to enter 8th in a few weeks, and all things considered I guess I’ve become famous to some degree (depending on who you ask! 😂)
I think 8th grade Brad would be impressed with how life has transpired, and honestly, he had some pretty solid advice for his older self, all of which I’ve stayed pretty true to!
Anyway, thank you all so much for the birthday wishes yesterday. It was a great relaxing day with the family. I’m excited for year 42. Here’s the contents of the note for your amusement:

If you’ve stopped drawing or playing guitar, start again.
Dear Brad,
This is yourself, remember when you wrote this? Now that you’re famous I don’t want myself to screw up. You have written this letter to not to let all of the money you have go to your head. Don’t go spend it on garbage and don’t bet (gamble). If you do this, then your life will go down the drain. You’ll lose your money and live on the streets. It may not sound true but it will happen. Whatever you are now, I just hope you’re famous at some form of art or entertainment. Also, if you’re a musician, don’t get into the drug scene.
- Yourself
P.S. Mary had a little lamb.
When you’re famous goals: 1. Meet other famous people 2. Don’t waste money 3. Write a book about your life 4. When you get awards thank everyone who helped you 5. Don’t get stuck up 6. Don’t brag 7. Invest your money 8. Try to live long (even if you’re not famous) 9. Don’t forget your friends and family 10. Never quit! <- most important -> Do your best
As many longtime fans know, August 5th is my birthday, which over the years has become "Five Times August Day" -- which really, is just a day to celebrate the music and show some love and support. So share your favorite tracks and videos today, pick up some merch (currently on sale!) and thank you so much for joining me on this journey over the years. ~ Brad
Indie Artist Trivia: It can take up to 7,500 streams for an artist to make just $15 through Spotify. Although streaming is convenient, your support when you pick up a physical copy of the music goes a long way!
