The Marcopia building on Pedder Road, South Mumbai, is a five-story residential and commercial structure most notably recognized for hosting the Czech Consulate.

The building also has had a fair share of controversies

The following article states the same :-

timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/consulate-…

The 2009 Diplomatic Tussle: The building gained local infamy in 2009 during an eviction dispute.

The consulate made headlines after the Bombay High Court heard a case filed by Khemka Exports, a commercial tenant who alleged that consulate officials illegally changed the locks and physically removed them.

The consulate initially attempted to claim diplomatic immunity to avoid court jurisdiction, but the court ruled that immunity did not cover unapproved evictions.

Family Property Dispute: The five-story building later became the subject of a bitter family dispute involving fabricated documents and usurpation.

Three brothers (the sons of a Zambian national) were booked by the Mumbai police and had their pre-arrest bail pleas denied by the sessions court over allegations that they forged a release deed and power of attorney to seize control of the entire property from their stepbrother.

Amazing architecture and locality indeed!

This heritage art deco architecture is the Vellard View,Pedder Road, Dr Gopalrao Deshmukh Marg, Cumballa Hill, South Mumbai.

Have a look at the small open balcony to the left and the rounded curvature of the central section of the building that is outlined by the window chajjas.

Check the wavy design pattern on the grills on the top end balcony which has now been fully covered by modern sliding windows, notice the arched windows on the bottom section of the building.

The building does seem neglected, there is an article online stating that the structural integrity of the building was affected due to a portion of the hill having caved in.

Detailed information about the same is stated in the article below:-

We continue from the previous part, have a look at the arch design and the pillars of the Smt. Puspaben Devrajji Sakaria Yatrik Bhavan, also known as Motishah Dharamshala which offers a stay for the Jain community.

A very limited information about the building was available online, it is best to confirm the details for boarding and lodging with the authorities directly by paying a visit here.

This is the link to its profile listed on Justdial

The premises also houses the Seth Motishah Adeshwarji Jain Mandir (Temple).

This is the (Part-4) Street view of Seth Motishah lane (Love Lane), Near Tarabaug, Byculla east, South Mumbai.

The tall upcoming under-construction skyscraper that was shown in the previous part can be seen clearly here, it is called the Aga Hall estate, regular buildings look quite small in front of it.

As we move forward, we reach gate of Sheth Motishah Jain Park, have a look at the window chajjas and the top turret of the building here.

To its left is the entrance gate towards the Sheth Motishah Adeshwarji Jain Mandir and a Dharmashala serving the jain community.

Notice the arches and the pillars of the building on the exterior.

This lane and section of the road honour the legacy of Sheth Motishah.

Information available online about Sheth Motishah Ji and his valuable contributions to the society are as follows:-

Sheth Motishah (also known as Motichand Shah or Motibhai) was an influential 19th-century billionaire Jain merchant and philanthropist based in Mumbai.

He is deeply revered for his monumental contributions to Jain heritage, animal welfare, and his efforts in establishing the iconic Jain temples across Mumbai and Palitana.

Key Highlights of His Life & Legacy

Early Life & Business: Born in 1782 in Mumbai (Bombay) to a family from Rajasthan, he built an enormously successful shipping and jewelry trading business.

Temple Construction: He financed and constructed prominent Jain temples, including the Godi Parshwanath Temple in Pydhonie, the Chintamani Paraswanath and Adinath Temples in Byculla, and the massive Moti Shah Temple on the sacred Shatrunjay Hills.

Animal Welfare: Horrified by the British government's cruel practice of culling stray dogs in Mumbai, he personally met with the Governor to successfully halt the killings. To protect and care for vulnerable animals, he established the Bombay Panjrapole in 1832.

Legacy of Charity: He funded massive charitable guest houses (dharamshalas) to shelter pilgrims and travelers. His name has become synonymous with compassion, charity, and selfless service within the Jain community.

This heritage architecture is the Sheridan House, August Kranti Road, Grant Road West, Kemps Corner, Tardeo, South Mumbai.

Have a look at the stonewalls, motifs, intricate carvings, open balconies with grillwork on them which pay a tribute to the old European styled architecture.

Now notice the angular curvature of the turret to the right, the design patterns are replicated in this end as well.

Limited information about it was available online, the green streets of August Kranti Marg and the August Kranti Maidan right in front of the building is an added advantage to the residents here.

A walk through this heritage street is truly a worthy experience with heritage buildings throughout the span.

This is the (Part-3) Street view of Seth Motishah lane (Love Lane), Near Tarabaug, Byculla east, South Mumbai.

Have a look at the beautiful sculpture of the Mother holding a baby at the cross lane junction.

We now explore the street further from here, to the left is an old school building "Mehta Chambers", the long corridors and the open balconies with floral motifs on them do invoke nostalgia.

Now notice the super tall under-construction skyscraper behind it, it signifies the rapid changing infrastructural landscape in and around the city.

But it is truly concerning to see such huge structures coming up on relatively smaller roads and areas with limited access, i hope they carry the necessary safety precautions such as providing apt emergency exits.

The road is a curvy and a green one which is truly refreshing.

Amazing locality indeed!

It is located near the Byculla Railway station and has been a landmark since the year of its inception.
