Helena Deland
Helena Deland is a Montreal-based musician interested in how songs can hold what eludes everyday language. Her music draws on reading and walking around.
She released her first album, Someone New, in 2020 on Luminelle Recordings. It was followed by the release of Hildegard, a collaborative album with fellow Montreal musician Ouri on section1. On October 13th, 2023, Helena reveals her sophomore full-length record, Goodnight Summerland, an intimate and meditative collection of eleven songs published by label and longtime collaborators Chivi Chivi. Goodnight Summerland features singles “Swimmer”, “Spring Bug”, “Bright Green Vibrant Gray” and “Strawberry Moon”.
In November 2023 and February 2024, Helena will be going on her first world headline tour. She has extensively toured North America and Europe opening for the likes of Weyes Blood, Andy Shauf, Connan Mockasin, Soccer Mommy and Iggy Pop.

Summerland is a town in BC where I was born and of which I have no memory. The album was recorded in the wake of my mother’s passing in 2021. It holds a lot of what grief has taught me.
The cover was painted by Beverly Zawitkoski, my mom’s childhood friend, whose art was all over the walls of the house I grew up in.
“Bright Green Vibrant Gray”, out today, will accompany “Swimmer” and “Spring Bug” on Goodnight Summerland.

Hello friends,
Swimmer is out today. It is for my mother, Maria McCullagh, who passed away on August 21st 2021. It is impossible to summarize her qualities; she was a funny kook, a bubbly conversationalist, an avid reader, a beautiful writer, an unredeemable plot spoiler, a courageous swimmer and an earnest music lover, available to be deeply affected by music. Grief has been an isolating experience, and today I feel lucky to be sharing this song with you.

when ouri and i made Jour 2 almost 3 years ago we had no clear intention of releasing what was bubbling out of our recent coup de foudre, the music happened quickly and everything else took its sweet time.Jour 2 breaks and repairs my ❤️! everything i make with ouri feels deep fun and free. it’s a dream to have melted into Hildegard 💍The video and visuals were directed by our hero Melissa Matos .
