Jefferson Airplane

Jefferson Airplane’s debut show was on August 13, 1965 at the Matrix nightclub in San Francisco. The first performance featured Marty Balin on vocals, Paul Kantner on vocals/rhythm guitar, and Jorma Kaukonen on lead guitar. Signe Anderson, (who sang on Jefferson Airplane’s first recording “Jefferson Airplane Takes Off”) also performed. Bass player, Jack Casady, and drummer, Skip Spence, (who was later one of the original members of Moby Grape) joined the band two months later. Spencer Dryden became the drummer in June of 1966 and Grace Slick joined as vocalist in October of 1966. They had hit singles "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," from the album “Surrealistic Pillow.” The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

In her memoir, she looks back on choosing her own path over the roles society tried to assign women. If you’ve read it, you know she tells it exactly like it is🔥

In Marty’s words, here is a bit more behind the song 🎧 “It’s No Secret”

“I originally wrote it with Otis Redding in mind. I used to hang out with Otis and follow him around like a little puppy dog and watch his shows. I wanted to write him a song that had his kind of groove thing, but Otis never did it. I’ve never seen anybody handle an audience like him and rock the joint. The energy level was amazing with this guy. For me, a highlight of the Monterey International Pop Festival was Otis. He staggered the crowd.” -Marty Balin

Jefferson Airplane

“Grace Slick’s style in the late 60’s was ahead of the times, many young women looking to her as a style guide for ethnically-influenced garments rather than the previous neat ‘mod’ style which was for “it” girls. It suddenly became fashionable to wear whatever the hell you wanted – nothing was too bizarre or zany.” -CLOTHES ON FILM

Jefferson Airplane

Did you know Jefferson Airplane was denied access to perform a free concert in San Francisco? Apparently, due to a ban on amplified instruments in Golden Gate Park. “We built this city on orchestral music,” is what the city told the Airplane.
