Hands-on gardening information and inspiration for real-life gardeners. Gardening in zone 5b, but much of the information offered here is applicable to a wide range of zones and areas. Let's garden together!
Hi gang! Let's do a live this weekend! It's been awhile. We'll chat about gardening and whatever else you want! It will be at 9:30 a.m. CST (10:30 a.m. EST) and I'll put a link up soon. In the meantime, if you have questions, leave them here and I'll try to kick off by answering those first. I hope you can make it!
I'm trying out something a little different with my latest video: Longer format, lots of different jobs, more of an episode, than a video, if that makes sense. I had fun editing this (although characteristically it took me forever). I hope you like it!
Hi everyone! Just a note that there won’t be a stroll today. I messed up my back in a battle with the ficus and I’m a bit slow to become mobile today. I’m planning to rally soon though.
Thank you for all the comments on the last few videos! I am catching up from being away last week but I promise I’ll be replying as much as possible ASAP. Thanks for your support and patience. And thanks for all the comments on Jim Putnam’s videos from my garden as well!
This sign at the greenhouses at Walters Gardens wholesale nursery in Michigan cracked me up. If only it were as easy as posting a sign. The Japanese beetles at my house seem to be terrible at reading the room (as I’ve clearly told them they are not welcome) so I don’t expect they would pay attention to a sign.
They seem to be persisting longer than usual at my house this year. What has your experience been?
Does anyone grow Hydrangea involucrata? I came across this one called Blue Bunny (aka ‘Wim Rutten’) at the Spring Meadow Nursery display garden (which is actually the home garden of the nursery owner). Unfortunately it is discontinued and still under patent so basically cannot be found, but there are other H. Incvolucrata out there. It is only hardy to zone 6, blooms later and has blue flowers that are unaffected by soil pH.
If you’ve grown this kind of hydrangea please share your experience! And if you’ve experienced the joy of falling in love with a new plant only to find out you cannot have it, I want to hear about that too.

This morning I’m at the Walters Gardens display gardens (western Michigan). Not a bad way to start the day. Any hosta lovers here?

Today I visited a garden that so many of you have recommended to me. Do you recognize it?
