I met Tibet for the first time on a holiday break during the year I spent teaching English in Hangzhou in China. Being a tourist for a few weeks convinced me that the landscape was spectacular, the people inscrutable and the climate quite unsuitable for me. I had to go back. Understanding this region of the world became a challenge to me.

During my second vacation visit to Tibetan lands I met the wife of Tenzin’s oldest son. Her marriage had been broken up by the Chinese police who knew, as she did not at the time, that her husband’s father and grandfather were Tibetan royalty. I gradually heard bits and pieces of her father-in-law’s story from her husband’s younger brother
