The Tucson Jazz Institute (TJI) (est 2008) is nationally recognized as one of the best jazz music education programs in the country. The first appearance by TJI’s top big band — the TJI Ellington Big Band — competing in the Essentially Ellington High School Big Band Competition in 2010 won them 1st place in the “Community” category. From that time on the TJI Ellington Big Band has been the ‘band to beat’ and Tucson became a ‘jazz’ hot spot on the global map.
The mission of the TJI is to create educational and performance opportunities for young musicians to reach their highest potential. Jazz ensembles at TJI are taught by seasoned educators with the highest standard of musical excellence and a proven track record of success in developing young talent. The TJI Ellington Big Band and the TJI Concord Combo have established themselves as two of the leading high school jazz groups in the country.
