mantras can be whispered in the mind, spoken or sung in the form of chant or song. there is also a wonderful form on mantra meditation, likhita mantra, which involves taking care to write the mantra out many times on paper - further manifesting the intention into physical reality. try and see if it works for you!

there's a new positive affirmation meditation class coming your way wednesday - see you on the mat fellow yogis 🪷

a new 12 week series starts on the channel this week called "taking flight." this series will incorporate mantras and positive affirmations!

traditionally in yogic and buddhist traditions, mantras are sounds or words that are repeated in a meditative manner in order to calm the fluctuations of the mind. this practice can aid in reaching a more profound state of concentration or consciousness. we'll be using mantra-like affirmations in the coming weeks' practices on the channel to deepen our asana and meditation experience.

see you on wednesday for the first asana practice of the series!

this wind chime features a pentatonic scale - which in simple terms, is a five note scale in which no two notes have any dissonance - basically no notes are so close together that they sound like they "clash." the pentatonic scale is very old and has been used in ancient music cultures all around the world, making it, in my opinion, a great scale for creating harmony and connection.

the shunya or akasha mudra, is the hand pose of ether or space. it is formed by holding the middle finger down with the thumb while extending the pointer, ring and pinky fingers. shunya mudra is said to aid with mental clarity and spiritual connection. we'll use it throughout this week's class as we reflect on and bring full circle our journey with the other elements and mudras in the series.

tinghsa are two small cymbals traditionally used by tibetan buddhist monks in meditation practice and to ward off hungry ghosts - spirits depicted as having huge bellies and tiny mouths, unable to satisfy their never ending hunger - probably a metaphor for the unquenchable nature of desire that leads to all suffering. this pair features the ashtamangala, or eight auspicious symbols. believe it or not, back when i worked as a musician on a cruise ship, i found these sitting in a bin in the garbage room, probably left behind by someone who had disembarked. they came to me in this way just as i had started practicing yoga asana. an auspicious sign for me indeed!

vayu translates to air in sanskrit. the vayu mudra helps to balance this element in the body - aiding with digestion and pain management. we'll be using it in this upcoming asana practice as a reminder that we can bring lightness and grace, even to challenging postures and sequences.

the drum has been the beat of cultures around the world since at least 5500 years ago. perhaps we subconsciously feel such an affinity to drums due to our own 4 chambered heart drumming away in our chest everyday.

either way, i love incorporating drumming into sound healing and movement practices. this is a gretsch floor tom that is actually a part of the drum kit i frequently perform and record with. because each instrument has a different range of frequencies (especially with how you tune it!) there is always room to explore the sensations that arise in the body and delve deeper into our aural experience.
