Welcome to Blue Heron Hill, we sit atop a hill over looking a small bay off of Lake Ontario, New York State. With only shy of 3 acres, we are trying to squeeze in as much as we can in a sustainable way. We recently acquired 8 more acres just down the road from our main property with plans to add more garden space and areas for new animals to roam. Join us in our successes and stumbles, it's always a learning process... Summers here for the kiddos are filled with gardening, art, cooking, chickens, science, reading, swimming, and boating.
The mission of my channel has since evolved over the last few years is to disseminating gardening, cooking and animal care information to anyone who has an interest. Come and join us as we become sustainable stewards of our land leaving it in better condition than what we found it.

My first slicer is blushing! This is an Abe Lincoln and is a first time tomato for me. It won the "First Tomato in the Garden" race for me. Cherry tomatoes have been coming in for a number of days already, so they don't count.
What is or was the first tomato in your garden this year?

Spectacular sunny September, oh happy day and the peppers are in abundance. How do you preserve your harvest of peppers?
Freeze, Dehydrate, Roast and pack in oil, or Freeze Dry?
I will be doing 3 of the 4 with more left in the garden to ripen. Most peppers will further ripen to a red color and I just love that. I left the Sugar Rush Peach and the Jalapenos out of the picture, those hot ones will be for another day.
Pictured left to right: paprika, nadapenos, Cornito, Yum Yum, Etiuda (orange), California wonder, Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry.

My husband is a mathematician so it is mandatory to have pie on PiDay (3.14...). Get a piece of pie and celebrate, no calories, they are all in the last piece!

I hope everyone is enjoying a sunny Friday! December and January were dull and gray, so it is finally nice to have the sun shining again. I decided to change the channel name to Blue Heron Hill since that's what I've always called it. I'll still be here to chat and answer questions and share my journey with you. Everything remains the same. New video up featuring one of my interns and a video on brassicas is in the works. Have a wonderful weekend!

Even the ladies are decorating for the holidays! We had to cut down the birch tree in the run area but we left a tall stump and dressed it festively. Enjoy the holiday season.

How do you clean up your fall garden? Do you do a total clean out and remove all dead and dying foliage, rake everything to bare ground for the winter? Or do you mulch and compost and cover? New video out showing how I like to tackle this garden task.

Pesto! This may be my last cutting of basil with the hot temps and the plant desperately wanting to flower and go to seed. So easy and satisfying, especially in the dead of winter to have your day brightened with the summer freshness of bright vibrant green basil.
4 cloves of garlic
4 cups of basil leaves
4 Tbs of pine nuts or walnuts
1 cup of Avacado or olive oil
1 fresh squeezed lemon
1 tsp of salt
All in a food processor. Traditionally 1/2 cup of parmesan but I'll put it in when it thaws over a bed of pasta.
Freeze in ice cube trays or flat in a plastic bag.
Enjoy!
