(PIRACEMA is the period of reproduction of river fish species, where these animals swim against the flow of river waters to deposit eggs. Piracema is an indigenous word Tupi that means rise or return of fish. LAMPIÃO was a polêmico character in the history of Brazil, belonging to one of the armed groups known as Cangaceiros. The cangaceiros were groups formed by poor men and women who invaded and stole farms to divide between the group. They acted in the northeastern region of the country and some of these groups, such as were extremely violent. 03-02-2025 DAY OF NAVIGATION IN RIO SÃO FRANCISCO (PART 3) SAILING BETWEEN CITIES AND STONE WALLS
The regions of the middle and submiddle of the São Francisco river has the presence of two large cities, Petrolina (Pernambuco) and Juazeiro (Bahia) and is populated by small and old towns such as Penedo and Piranhas (Alagoas). In these regions are also the São Francisco River Monument, a unit of study and conservation of nature, and the canyons, a geological formation that begins at the waterfalls of Paulo Afonso, in Bahia, and extends to the region of the Xingó between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. In this place it is possible to navigate between large walls of rocks carved by the river, some with impressive height and colors ranging from gray granite to reddish in some stretches of the path, which generates beautiful contrasts with the greenish blue tone of the river. This is the 5th largest navigable canyon in the world, with just over 65Km of extension and where the rock walls form beautiful paths lit by the sun. The valley of the river São Francisco is the cradle of many cultural activities and various activities related to tourism, gastronomy (especially wine tourism), ecotourism, scientific studies, etc. Small inns, boat trips and gastronomy are the guarantee of fun. Even, one of the first people to be fascinated by this region, was the emperor Dom Pedro II, who sailed through these waters on October 18, 1859.

03-02-2025 DAY OF NAVIGATION IN RIO SÃO FRANCISCO (PART 2) FRANCISCO AND ANTONIO, THE DESERT THAT BECAME SEA AND THE TROPICAL WINES
The valley of the São Francisco river, when it crosses the northeast of Brazil, cuts through the region known as Northeastern Sertão. This is an area of the country that has arid and semi-arid climates, that is, it is a place prone to long periods without rain and with intense heat. In this region, in the interior of the state of Bahia, in the city of Canudos, a religious fanatic named Antonio Conselheiro, interesting character of the history of Brazil, prophesied in the year 1833: One day the Sertão will become sea. Well, this prophecy came true, but not in the way that Antony prophesied. The Sertão did not become sea, but gained some seas. The small and medium-sized dams that store the waters of the rains, streams and artificial canals that distribute the water of the São Francisco river through some cities. The other seas of this Sertão are in the regions known as Medium and Sub-medium São Francisco, which cover the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe, where we find the great lakes formed by the dams of the powerful hydroelectric existing in this river. It stores 34.1 billion cubic meters of water, being one of the 10 largest artificial lakes in the world. With its 6 turbines, it can generate 1.05 million kilowatts. It has a lock of approximately 120m in length, 17m wide and an unevenness of 35,2m high, which allows the passage of some ships.

FROM COASTAL TO INLAND
This river rises in the state of Minas Gerais. The historical spring is in the Serra da Canastra and the geographic (true) spring is located in the municipality of Medeiros. From the source to the sea, this river crosses 5 states, 521 municipalities and meets the Atlantic ocean after traveling a little more than 2800km where, in the final stretch, it separates the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. Its watershed, that is, the areas where rainwater forms secondary rivers that fill the main river, covers a total of 7 states and 505 municipalities (basin area: 641,000km²). In the states bathed by this river, several economic activities have developed such as artisanal fishing, agriculture, industry, agro-industry (especially the sector directed to the cultivation of grains and fruits), aquaculture (raising aquatic animals for consumption or study), mineral extraction and, still growing, activities related to the tourism, sports and leisure sectors. Unfortunately, this river has suffered from deforestation on its banks and tributaries, which generates erosion, sedimentation and reduction of water volume. It also suffers from pollution caused by the untreated sewage in some cities and the uncontrolled use of water by farms. And which river are we talking about? Well, the indigenous people, true owners of Brazilian lands, called it Opará, which means "Rio-Mar". The Portuguese, who spread throughout the country in search of precious woods and minerals, renamed it São Francisco. When the steamship Saldanha Marinho arrived in the city of Barra do Guaicuí, in the state of Minas Gerais, on February 3, 1871, inaugurated the navigation route of the São Francisco, which had as objectives to integrate and develop the interior of the country, that at the time, had the largest cities concentrated only on the coast. Hence the nickname "River of National Integration".

02-02-2025 DAY OF IEMANJÁ (FINAL) FROM INTOLERANCE TO GLORY.
And on February 2, there is a special and very large event that takes place in the state of Bahia. It is the only religious event in honor of an Orixá, without associating it with a Catholic Saint. It all began in 1923, when a group of fishermen from the Rio Vermelho neighborhood (Fishing Colony Z1), desperate because of the shortage of fish, decided to ask the Father of the Church of Our Lady of Sant'Ana that during the feast for this Saint, hethem lucky. But for ideological and religious reasons, the priest refused and insulted them, because some of the fishermen are followers of Candomblé and Umbanda. Sad and indignant, these fishermen suggested to the rest of the group that they seek a Mother of Santo to resolve the situation. The Mother of Santo/priestess, Julia Bogun, suggested to them that they give a gift to Dona dos Mares and after debate, the suggestion was accepted. Two weeks in advance, they wrote their prayers in letters, built a small altar, a wooden boat and had several baskets of straw made. In the early morning of February 2, a fireworks display announced the arrival of a sculpture of Iemanjá that would be placed on the boat and around it, were positioned the straw baskets for other fishermen and the "children of the Mermaid" also deposit their wishes and gifts.
Meanwhile, in the Temple/Terreiro chosen to hold the religious part of the event, the priests/Sons of Santo prepared the gifts to offer to another African sacred entity, Oxum, the Goddess of Freshwater (which in the syncretism of Bahia, is Our Lady of Pleasures or Our Lady of Candeia, which is also celebrated on February 2) and then prepared the gifts and favorite foods of Orixá do Mar. In this temple, the priests also organized the baskets of straw with wishes/ prayers and gifts and watered them with perfumed water with lavender, making the aroma spread throughout Rio Vermelho neighborhood. The highlight of the event occurred when the fishermen, accompanied by percussion groups, passed through the church that despised them, crossed the street, arrived at a beach full of African religious groups, of the party and curious people and took the image of Iemanjá and the present to the sea, starting the great maritime procession, resignifying the Feast of Sant'Ana (moved to July 26) and giving Bahia and Brazil a beautiful religious tradition.

The festivals in honor of Iemanjá, depending on the religious group (Candomblé or Umbanda), religious syncretism or the region of Brazil, occur on different days. In the Umbanda, the festivities take place on 15 August (day of Our Lady of the Assumption and Our Lady of Good Journey), 8 December (Our Lady of Conception) or 31 December, just before the turn of the year. In Rio de Janeiro, the party that was held on December 31 since the end of the 40’s and which aimed to demystify and reduce prejudice against African religions, was held mainly on the 29th because of the increasing number of people at the New Year’s Eve party and the commercialization of this event, where large areas of the beaches are occupied by the hotel chain, reducing places for African-American worshipreligious, which ended up being seen as a discreet form of exclusion. In Candomblé, the homengem the Queen of the Sea takes place on 1 and 2 February, due to the syncretism with Our Lady of Candeia and Our Lady of the Navigators.

The representations of this African deity are also varied. On African soil, it is the symbol of fertility and motherhood. She is depicted as a black woman, curvilinear body, wide hips and very large breasts. May be represented pregnant, breastfeeding or accompanied by some children. In Brazil, the figure of Iemanjá suffered influences from indigenous cultures, European and religious syncretism. First, as the passage of the enslaved was carried out over the sea and, by being attributed to it a miracle of multiplication of fish in the Bahia sea, the Brazilian Iemanjá, which began to be worshipped as the Goddess of the Rivers, as it was originally in Nigeria, became more associated with the sea. In opposition to this almost holy quiet Iemanjá, we have another representation coming from the mixture of Iara, an indigenous deity of the rivers, with Quianda, an Angolan goddess that is sometimes represented by a large bright fish, and mermaids of European mythologies. It is a mermaid Iemanjá of brown or light skin, sensual body and charming voice with which she attracts the men of the sea to her underwater kingdom to punish them or to love him, when she falls in love with one of them.

Due to the war between the Ebá and the people of Dahomey, many features and rituals in honor of Yemojá were lost or modified. When the Ebas were attacked, their culture was appropriated by the invaders and received the addition of elements from the cultures of the invader and other African groups, while a part of the Ebas people moved to another region. Dandalunda or Quianda and Quissimbe or Kayala. Are Inquices, Angolan deities equivalent to this Orixás (Angola). Emanjá (Trinidad and Tobago), Yemayá (Cuba), Met Agwe Tawoyo (Loa of the Haiti) or one of Las Metresas (Haiti/Dominican Republic). These are some of the names by which Orixá Yemojá is known from Nigeria. The name Yemojá comes from the phrase "Yèyé omo ejá", which means "Mother whose children are fish". In Brazil, the Orixá received the name in the Portuguese version; Iemanjá. From the greeting "Awá ààbò à yó, Yemojá!" (We are protected, Iemanjá!) , Iemanjá Marabô emerged. From the mixture with indigenous culture, Janaína and Mãe D'água emerged. (PIRACEMA is the period of reproduction of river fish species, where these animals swim against the flow of river waters to deposit eggs. SAILING BETWEEN CITIES AND STONE WALLS
The regions of the middle and submiddle of the São Francisco river has the presence of two large cities, Petrolina (Pernambuco) and Juazeiro (Bahia) and is populated by small and old towns such as Penedo and Piranhas (Alagoas). In these regions are also the São Francisco River Monument, a unit of study and conservation of nature, and the canyons, a geological formation that begins at the waterfalls of Paulo Afonso, in Bahia, and extends to the region of the Xingó between the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. In this place it is possible to navigate between large walls of rocks carved by the river, some with impressive height and colors ranging from gray granite to reddish in some stretches of the path, which generates beautiful contrasts with the greenish blue tone of the river. This is the 5th largest navigable canyon in the world, with just over 65Km of extension and where the rock walls form beautiful paths lit by the sun. The valley of the river São Francisco is the cradle of many cultural activities and various activities related to tourism, gastronomy (especially wine tourism), ecotourism, scientific studies, etc. Small inns, boat trips and gastronomy are the guarantee of fun. Even, one of the first people to be fascinated by this region, was the emperor Dom Pedro II, who sailed through these waters on October 18, 1859.

FRANCISCO AND ANTONIO, THE DESERT THAT BECAME SEA AND THE TROPICAL WINES
The valley of the São Francisco river, when it crosses the northeast of Brazil, cuts through the region known as Northeastern Sertão. This is an area of the country that has arid and semi-arid climates, that is, it is a place prone to long periods without rain and with intense heat. In this region, in the interior of the state of Bahia, in the city of Canudos, a religious fanatic named Antonio Conselheiro, interesting character of the history of Brazil, prophesied in the year 1833: One day the Sertão will become sea. Well, this prophecy came true, but not in the way that Antony prophesied. The Sertão did not become sea, but gained some seas. The small and medium-sized dams that store the waters of the rains, streams and artificial canals that distribute the water of the São Francisco river through some cities. The other seas of this Sertão are in the regions known as Medium and Sub-medium São Francisco, which cover the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe, where we find the great lakes formed by the dams of the powerful hydroelectric existing in this river. FROM COASTAL TO INLAND
This river rises in the state of Minas Gerais. The historical spring is in the Serra da Canastra and the geographic (true) spring is located in the municipality of Medeiros. From the source to the sea, this river crosses 5 states, 521 municipalities and meets the Atlantic ocean after traveling a little more than 2800km where, in the final stretch, it separates the states of Alagoas and Sergipe. Its watershed, that is, the areas where rainwater forms secondary rivers that fill the main river, covers a total of 7 states and 505 municipalities (basin area: 641,000km²). In the states bathed by this river, several economic activities have developed such as artisanal fishing, agriculture, industry, agro-industry (especially the sector directed to the cultivation of grains and fruits), aquaculture (raising aquatic animals for consumption or study), mineral extraction and, still growing, activities related to the tourism, sports and leisure sectors. Unfortunately, this river has suffered from deforestation on its banks and tributaries, which generates erosion, sedimentation and reduction of water volume. It also suffers from pollution caused by the untreated sewage in some cities and the uncontrolled use of water by farms. And which river are we talking about? Well, the indigenous people, true owners of Brazilian lands, called it Opará, which means "Rio-Mar". The Portuguese, who spread throughout the country in search of precious woods and minerals, renamed it São Francisco. When the steamship Saldanha Marinho arrived in the city of Barra do Guaicuí, in the state of Minas Gerais, on February 3, 1871, inaugurated the navigation route of the São Francisco, which had as objectives to integrate and develop the interior of the country, that at the time, had the largest cities concentrated only on the coast. Hence the nickname "River of National Integration".

FROM INTOLERANCE TO GLORY.
And on February 2, there is a special and very large event that takes place in the state of Bahia. It is the only religious event in honor of an Orixá, without associating it with a Catholic Saint. It all began in 1923, when a group of fishermen from the Rio Vermelho neighborhood (Fishing Colony Z1), desperate because of the shortage of fish, decided to ask the Father of the Church of Our Lady of Sant'Ana that during the feast for this Saint, hethem lucky. But for ideological and religious reasons, the priest refused and insulted them, because some of the fishermen are followers of Candomblé and Umbanda. Sad and indignant, these fishermen suggested to the rest of the group that they seek a Mother of Santo to resolve the situation. The Mother of Santo/priestess, Julia Bogun, suggested to them that they give a gift to Dona dos Mares and after debate, the suggestion was accepted. Two weeks in advance, they wrote their prayers in letters, built a small altar, a wooden boat and had several baskets of straw made. In the early morning of February 2, a fireworks display announced the arrival of a sculpture of Iemanjá that would be placed on the boat and around it, were positioned the straw baskets for other fishermen and the "children of the Mermaid" also deposit their wishes and gifts.
Meanwhile, in the Temple/Terreiro chosen to hold the religious part of the event, the priests/Sons of Santo prepared the gifts to offer to another African sacred entity, Oxum, the Goddess of Freshwater (which in the syncretism of Bahia, is Our Lady of Pleasures or Our Lady of Candeia, which is also celebrated on February 2) and then prepared the gifts and favorite foods of Orixá do Mar. In this temple, the priests also organized the baskets of straw with wishes/ prayers and gifts and watered them with perfumed water with lavender, making the aroma spread throughout Rio Vermelho neighborhood. The highlight of the event occurred when the fishermen, accompanied by percussion groups, passed through the church that despised them, crossed the street, arrived at a beach full of African religious groups, of the party and curious people and took the image of Iemanjá and the present to the sea, starting the great maritime procession, resignifying the Feast of Sant'Ana (moved to July 26) and giving Bahia and Brazil a beautiful religious tradition.

THE SANTAS, THE ORIXÁS AND A GREAT PARTY
The festivals in honor of Iemanjá, depending on the religious group (Candomblé or Umbanda), religious syncretism or the region of Brazil, occur on different days. In the Umbanda, the festivities take place on 15 August (day of Our Lady of the Assumption and Our Lady of Good Journey), 8 December (Our Lady of Conception) or 31 December, just before the turn of the year. In Rio de Janeiro, the party that was held on December 31 since the end of the 40’s and which aimed to demystify and reduce prejudice against African religions, was held mainly on the 29th because of the increasing number of people at the New Year’s Eve party and the commercialization of this event, where large areas of the beaches are occupied by the hotel chain, reducing places for African-American worshipreligious, which ended up being seen as a discreet form of exclusion. In Candomblé, the homengem the Queen of the Sea takes place on 1 and 2 February, due to the syncretism with Our Lady of Candeia and Our Lady of the Navigators.

The representations of this African deity are also varied. On African soil, it is the symbol of fertility and motherhood. She is depicted as a black woman, curvilinear body, wide hips and very large breasts. May be represented pregnant, breastfeeding or accompanied by some children. In Brazil, the figure of Iemanjá suffered influences from indigenous cultures, European and religious syncretism. First, as the passage of the enslaved was carried out over the sea and, by being attributed to it a miracle of multiplication of fish in the Bahia sea, the Brazilian Iemanjá, which began to be worshipped as the Goddess of the Rivers, as it was originally in Nigeria, became more associated with the sea. Second, because of religious syncretism, the African Orixá was associated with the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Conception, Nsa. Mrs. da Candeia, Nsa. Ms. da Boa Viagem or Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes). In opposition to this almost holy quiet Iemanjá, we have another representation coming from the mixture of Iara, an indigenous deity of the rivers, with Quianda, an Angolan goddess that is sometimes represented by a large bright fish, and mermaids of European mythologies. It is a mermaid Iemanjá of brown or light skin, sensual body and charming voice with which she attracts the men of the sea to her underwater kingdom to punish them or to love him, when she falls in love with one of them.

A WOMAN WITH MANY QUALITIES
Due to the war between the Ebá and the people of Dahomey, many features and rituals in honor of Yemojá were lost or modified. When the Ebas were attacked, their culture was appropriated by the invaders and received the addition of elements from the cultures of the invader and other African groups, while a part of the Ebas people moved to another region. This phenomenon of mixing cultures also occurred with various peoples and various African deities. The process of slavery also brought to Brazil the various ways in which the African peoples worshipped a single Orixá. This gave the Iemanjá and other deities, various personalities and forms of worship or, as the adpetos of African religions say, various qualities. As an example we can cite the "quality" Iemanjá Yemowô or Yeyemowo, the wife of Orixá Oxalá. There is also the "quality" Iemanjá Açabá, Iyásabáé, Ayabá or Sobá, the older version, dangerous and indomitable wife of Orumilá. Iemanjá Asessu, the helpful and respectable daughter and messenger of Olocum, the King of the Oceans. We have the popular Iemanjá Ogunté, extremely aggressive, severe and rancorous. In the Cuban Santería, she is an excellent rider who lives in the untouched forests and dances with the Majá, the great snake. Depending on the Afro-religious group, Ogunté may be the mother or wife of the great warrior Ogum Alabedé (Ògún Alagbedé). But two characteristics are common to all: being a protective mother who attends to all her children who need her help and being the embodiment of the woman’s strength.

ONE GODDESS, SEVERAL NAMES
Dandalunda or Quianda and Quissimbe or Kayala. Are Inquices, Angolan deities equivalent to this Orixás (Angola). Emanjá (Trinidad and Tobago), Yemayá (Cuba), Met Agwe Tawoyo (Loa of the Haiti) or one of Las Metresas (Haiti/Dominican Republic). These are some of the names by which Orixá Yemojá is known from Nigeria. The name Yemojá comes from the phrase "Yèyé omo ejá", which means "Mother whose children are fish". In Brazil, the Orixá received the name in the Portuguese version; Iemanjá. From the greeting "Awá ààbò à yó, Yemojá!" (We are protected, Iemanjá!) , Iemanjá Marabô emerged. From the mixture with indigenous culture, Janaína and Mãe D'água emerged. It is also known as Odò Ìyá (Mother of the River), Inaê (The Venerable Mother), Dona Maria, Queen of the Sea or Mermaid, the latter being a mixture of indigenous, African and European cultures.
