hey all, wanted to give a heads up that the next video posted on this channel will be sponsored. if you're disappointed or just curious about how i came to this decision, please read on:
in an ideal world, my channel would not have any sponsors. a lot of channels that i admire don't do sponsorships at all, and to be quite honest, i find integrated ads to be a bit annoying as a viewer, even if it's easy to identify and skip through them. i know some of you will probably feel the same way when you see one in my video, so let me explain.
for the last two years, this channel has been my full-time job. and the thing is, taking long stretches of time to make dense, high-quality videos is ultimately not really conducive to making money efficiently on YouTube. YouTube would much prefer if i upload lower-effort content more frequently. i have zero interest in doing that. the unfortunate result of this is that i am not making enough money from just AdSense to continue doing Melee Moments full-time.
at this point, i feel i have two options. the first option is to go full-sponsorship-mode - if i release one or two sponsored videos every month, i would probably be making enough to be financially stable. the problem with this is that my workflow has never really been based on making one or two videos a month. i feel much better about making a video when i have an idea that i feel is really strong, and i mold it and massage it for a few weeks (or months!) before finally deciding it's got legs and diving in - for example, the outline for the nana video was written last August. i like taking my time and making bespoke videos that i really believe in, and i don't want the sponsorship cycle to morph me into a conveyor belt.
the second option is to find some other part-time or full-time job, and then balance the channel (and it's modest Patreon+AdSense income) with the new job. this way i could keep making videos on the schedule that i want, without feeling pressured to change my model to make sufficient full-time income.
so, after some deliberation, i have chosen the second option. of course, now you might be wondering "well, in that second option, you don't do sponsorships... so why did you tell us you're doing a sponsorship?" here's your answer: basically, i need some money to sustain myself while looking for a job. that's it. that's the reason. the way i see it, i am borrowing against the credibility of the channel i've been building for the last few years, and only out of necessity.
if you made it this far, thanks for reading. it matters to me that you guys understand why i'm doing these things. i am just a guy who likes making Melee videos, and right now i'm in a spot where i need some financial support. the channel is able to help me with that in the short-term, so that's the plan. i certainly don't intend to have sponsorships on every melee moments upload. the short ~3 minute analysis videos and the longer high-effort stuff will always remain sponsor-free.
hello there i have a long video coming out ~next weekend, it is my longest video at 13.5 minutes and i am very proud of it and hope you like it :) it's also up early on my patreon if you want to support the channel woooo (NO SPOILERS)
still working on some new stuff for this channel, but in the meantime i wrote original music for wolfey's latest video about his experience competing at the 2024 Pokemon World Championships. i'm really proud of how the tracks turned out!
please check out the video, and listen to the tracks on streaming services if you like :)
working on one long video (probably will be my longest?) and a bunch of shorts. after that i will probably do more longs for a while, hopefully monthly/bimonthly-ish
but i'll always drop everything and do the classic 2-to-3-minute format if someone does something nasty at a tournament, like i did with wizzy and aklo last year
thanks for all the support, making a push on this channel in 2025 :)
hey all, wanted to announce that i've finally uploaded my original music from the last two videos to a dedicated youtube channel! if youtube music is your medium of choice, you should be able to find the songs there
i'm in the process of getting the channel approved as an "official artist channel" as well, which should eventually make the youtube music experience a bit more seamless
new short coming out tomorrow, and a long-overdue melee moment installment coming next weds!
have a new plan for weekly videos that i think is more sustainable than the last. we'll see how it goes. basic idea is that i have a stockpile of weekly shorts, and then work on longform vids as the shorts go out and try to drop one proper upload a month!
thank you all so much for 1 million views on the temple jump video!!! i am so excited for the future of the channel and so grateful that i get to spend my time figuring out how to share melee's insane intricacies and jank with unsuspecting viewers :)
one year ago i posted a silly little analysis video and it pretty much changed the trajectory of my life. thanks to everyone who has encouraged me along the way, more to come :)
if you are thinking about making something random or maybe not sure if you should post it, JUST DO IT
i'm also excited to announce that when my next video goes live this week (!!!), subscribers to my premium patreon tier will receive an anniversary sticker! 🎂 the sticker is also available on my print store here: frasermakesart.com/products/melee-moments-sticker
for the first time, i have a substantial backlog of video ideas.
to be exact, i have 3 ideas for 8-10 minute videos which are pretty much titled and outlined. i'm nervous about making longer stuff but the nana video helped me build my confidence in exploring different formats. also hoping i can start having multiple projects going at once, that way i can step between them in case i'm starting to get burnt out on a particular idea
hoping the first video will be done in early august. ideally two of them are released in august and then the third debuts in september, eventual goal is two longer uploads each month
and thanks for all the support on the most recent upload! i was starting to doubt it towards the end of production, but it's doing very well and all of my concern has melted away, so i think longer form vids are the future of the channel
let me know any thoughts you have in the comments. see you soon!
