Bosque Redondo Memorial is the site of internment for both Mescalero Apache and Navajo people. In the 1860's General Carleton was in charge of the New Mexico Territory and he enlisted Colonel Kit Carson to wage war first on the Mescalero Apache people and then on the Navajo using "scorched earth" warfare. The order was to shot the men and bring the women and children to the "reservation" in the eastern plains. The people were kept at the site from 1863 until 1868 and nearly 10,000 people interned in near starvation conditions. Our mission is to tell the truth and teach about this time and to work towards healing.
