Straits Chinese by Guan Hoe Soon is Singapore's Oldest Nonya Restaurant. It was started in 1953 some 66 years ago. I am the 3rd generation of this SME that was started by my grandfather Mr. Yap Chee Quee who migrated from Hainan Island in the 1940s. The business was subsequently handed to my father Mr. Yap Kow Soon who is the 2nd generation. Today, this business is run together with my sisters.
Hainanese are revere chefs since the early days of Singapore and he started working as a stay in cook for a wealthy Peranakan family. From history books, it seems to be the Chew family where Joo Chiat Road was named after Mr. Chew Joo Chiat. Today, we have 3 outlets at Joo Chiat, Cecil Street, and Esplanade Theatres. We also provide catering services to customers homes and offices. We are also glad to be featured in the Michelin guide.
With many satisfied customers whom we had the honor of service, we are confident that we will delight you and your friends with an authentic Peranakan affair.
