More than 250,000 people died, thousands were forced to carry out inhumane acts as child soldiers, and countless war crimes were never brought to justice.

Today, another war is ravaging the country: the synthetic drug Kush is ruining lives, with one in four people in Liberia thought to be addicted.

Every year, survivors of a refugee tragedy that shook Europe in 2013 meet on Lampedusa.

There, on October 3 2013, a rickety trawler carrying asylum seekers from Eritrea and Somalia capsized a short distance off the island. Only 155 people survived, while 368 people drowned.

Fisherman Vito Fiorino was able to pull 47 people out of the water, saving their lives. Many of those rescued visit their new "father" Vito on the anniversary.

This month marks one year since a canopy collapsed outside a train station and killed 16 people in Novi Sad, Serbia.

The tragedy triggered mass, student-led protests against the government, which has become a wider anti-corruption movement.

Initially, protestors wanted accountability, but now they're calling for new elections and democratic reform.

Serbia's prime minister resigned in January along with other government ministers, but so far nobody has been charged or tried in connection with the roof collapse.
