Today marks 25 years since the September 11 attacks.

This week, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared previously hidden reports, revealing that New Yorkers had been lied to about the toxic air recorded in Manhattan after the attacks.

"People got sick because the leaders they trusted lied and told them they were safe to breathe in toxic air," he said in a press conference announcing the release of 170,000 documents related to the attacks.

Since that day, illnesses related to dust and smoke from the towers' collapse have killed more than three times the 3,000 lives lost in the attacks, according to US health officials.

As well as the physical health impact, the trauma from that day continues, and survivors are still deeply scarred by their experiences.

Our report from 2021, 'USA: 9-11 Survivors' Long Struggle', met those forgotten people 20 years on, as they struggled to overcome what happened on that tragic day.
