Each year, wildfires are becoming a bigger problem in Europe, impacting large areas of the continent.
Most recently, in Spain, several active fires have forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents in various towns, with more than 77,000 hectares burned and around 90,000 people evacuated or confined to their homes.
With heatwaves raging across Europe this summer, we're looking into this phenomenon and how the climate crisis is causing serious issues for the our people and wildlife.
πΊ Greece - After the Wildfires π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3DrV...
In August 2025, devastating fires reduced the entire northern part of the Greek island of Chios to ashes. Residents of this rural area were powerless to stop the flames as they swept away everything in their path. Today, they feel abandoned by the authorities.
πΊ Fire Risks in Europe's National Parks π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zPst...
Climate change, drought and forest fires are putting pressure on Europeβs national parks. In Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland National Park, which straddles the German Czech border, forest fires in 2022 caused widespread damage. The HrdliΔka couple lost their home, and the National Park was criticised for a lack of fire prevention action. Meanwhile, experts are developing new strategies to prevent wildfires.
πΊ Sicily - Who Profits from Forest Fires? π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_yYE...
Thousands of wildfires devastate large areas of Sicily every summer. In 2024 alone, around 5,000 square kilometres were destroyed - an area larger than a major city. Satellite data shows an alarming picture: more than 80 per cent of fires are started deliberately. But why?
πΊ The Age of Fire π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1fcR...
Humans are the only species that can produce fire. For a long time, we lived intimately with fire, which helped our development. But today, fire seems like a destroyer, with ever more intense wildfires threatening our cities, driven by climate change. How can we live better with the flames?

ARTE goes on tour! π βοΈ
This summer we will explore the European capitals in a whole new way. Far from the usual streets, the programme collection "European capitals - Hidden Gems" takes you to places where stories, people, and traditions intersect.
Board the night train in Prague and travel all the way to the beautiful scenery of Sado, south of Lisbon, to discover a new, surprising and engaging side of Europe.
And, for every city, ARTE has collaborated with a local artist to show you the heroes of our stories. The first one features Raquel Gaspar, a marine biologist and co-founder of the Ocean Alive association, which campaigns to save seagrass beds, which are essential for the survival of the dolphins living in the estuary of Sado.

Pride month is drawing to a close π³οΈβπ
Each year, June commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and reminds us of the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals. π
The lessons learned during this month π and the conversations had are worth continuing all year round, so while Pride month ends, we invite you to learn about the issues currently facing the LGBTQ+ community around the world with the below selection of documentaries.
πΊ Queer in OrbΓ‘n's Hungary π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uolqf...
Hungary is the first country in the European Union to ban a pride march. A decision that is far from discouraging BΓ©la, Norbert and Zsu, who march with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets of the capital, a record for Budapest Pride. Although there are hopes for a better future for Hungaryβs LGBTQ+ people, the Orbanβs government continues to target and stigmatise the community.
πΊ Gay Priests Break Their Silence π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sR4g...
Being a priest and living an openly homosexual life is not possible in the Catholic Church. ARTE reporters accompanied several gay priests in France for two years as they went about their daily lives. They speak frankly in front of the camera for the first time.
πΊ Trans in Trump's America π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqYMb...
Donald Trump wants to "stop the transgender madness". Since returning to the White House, he has initiated a rollback on trans rights. Some transgender people now feel they want to leave the USA, whilst others are staying and resisting.

It's HOT in Europe right now. π₯΅βοΈ
The continent is currently experiencing record temperatures amid the current heatwave. This week, France π«π· has endured its hottest day since records began, and the UK π¬π§ and Spain πͺπΈ hit new records for any day in June.
Across the globe, we're seeing extreme heat becoming more and more normal. In 2024, India experienced the longest heatwave in its history. Temperatures soared to over 50Β°C in the capital, New Delhi, and up to 56Β°C in Nagpur, in the centre of the country.

It's been 10 years since the Brexit referendum - so what does an independent Britain look like today? π¬π§πͺπΊ
Since the vote, the country has continued to face instability, with Keir Starmer's resignation this week meaning the nation is now awaiting its seventh Prime Minister in a decade.
Starmerβs successor could well be Andy Burnham, the popular former Mayor of Manchester, nicknamed 'the King of the North'.
πΊ For more information, check out our explainer 'United Kingdom: Political Instability', here π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgMY4...
Another key player in UK politics right now is Nigel Farage. In 2016, he was one of the main supporters of Brexit in the referendum. Today, his credo is the fight against immigration.
Farage and his party, Reform UK, had very good results in recent local and regional elections. But his big dream is to become Prime Minister at the next general election.
