El Mencho was the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and his death triggered a new wave of violence. Mexico and the US are now determined to finally break the cartels’ power.

Each year, wildfires are becoming a bigger problem in Europe, impacting large areas of the continent.

Most recently, in Spain, several active fires have forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents in various towns, with more than 77,000 hectares burned and around 90,000 people evacuated or confined to their homes.

With heatwaves raging across Europe this summer, we're looking into this phenomenon and how the climate crisis is causing serious issues for the our people and wildlife.

In August 2025, devastating fires reduced the entire northern part of the Greek island of Chios to ashes. Residents of this rural area were powerless to stop the flames as they swept away everything in their path. Today, they feel abandoned by the authorities.

Climate change, drought and forest fires are putting pressure on Europe’s national parks. In Bohemian-Saxon Switzerland National Park, which straddles the German Czech border, forest fires in 2022 caused widespread damage. The Hrdlička couple lost their home, and the National Park was criticised for a lack of fire prevention action. Meanwhile, experts are developing new strategies to prevent wildfires.

This summer we will explore the European capitals in a whole new way. Far from the usual streets, the programme collection "European capitals - Hidden Gems" takes you to places where stories, people, and traditions intersect.

Board the night train in Prague and travel all the way to the beautiful scenery of Sado, south of Lisbon, to discover a new, surprising and engaging side of Europe.

And, for every city, ARTE has collaborated with a local artist to show you the heroes of our stories. The first one features Raquel Gaspar, a marine biologist and co-founder of the Ocean Alive association, which campaigns to save seagrass beds, which are essential for the survival of the dolphins living in the estuary of Sado.

📺 David Hockney, the iconic British painter, died last month.

Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1937, Hockney became one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries across his six-decade career.

Notably, his paintings have shaped the contemporary vision of Californian landscapes – their specific light, and their swimming pools.

Mysteries of Lisbon draws the viewer into a perpetual whirlwind of adventures and misadventures, coincidences and revelations, emotions and violent passions, acts of revenge, and thwarted or illicit loves, in a turbulent journey across Portugal, France, Italy, and Brazil.

In this Lisbon of intrigues and hidden identities, we encounter a gallery of characters who shape the destiny of Pedro da Silva, an orphan and boarding student at a religious school: Father Dinis, a former libertine aristocrat turned vigilante; a countess consumed by jealousy and thirsting for revenge; a bloodthirsty pirate who becomes a prosperous businessman.

All move through the history of the nineteenth century, accompanying our protagonist’s search for identity.

Each year, June commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and reminds us of the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals. 🏆

It's HOT in Europe right now. 🥵☀️

The continent is currently experiencing record temperatures amid the current heatwave. This week, France 🇫🇷 has endured its hottest day since records began, and the UK 🇬🇧 and Spain 🇪🇸 hit new records for any day in June.

Across the globe, we're seeing extreme heat becoming more and more normal. In 2024, India experienced the longest heatwave in its history. Temperatures soared to over 50°C in the capital, New Delhi, and up to 56°C in Nagpur, in the centre of the country.

Since the vote, the country has continued to face instability, with Keir Starmer's resignation this week meaning the nation is now awaiting its seventh Prime Minister in a decade.

Another key player in UK politics right now is Nigel Farage. In 2016, he was one of the main supporters of Brexit in the referendum. Today, his credo is the fight against immigration.
