Today marks 250 years of American Independence 🇺🇸

Our new two-part documentary, 'America Who Are You' takes a look at the country as it reaches this milestone, and examines the values upon which the American nation is founded – a nation now in the midst of Trump’s second presidential term.

We examine America through the lens of four themes: ideal of freedom, the prominence of religion, the American dream and love of country.

📺 David Hockney, the iconic British painter, died last month.

Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1937, Hockney became one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries across his six-decade career.

Notably, his paintings have shaped the contemporary vision of Californian landscapes – their specific light, and their swimming pools.

📺 A film recommendation: Mysteries of Lisbon (2010)

Mysteries of Lisbon draws the viewer into a perpetual whirlwind of adventures and misadventures, coincidences and revelations, emotions and violent passions, acts of revenge, and thwarted or illicit loves, in a turbulent journey across Portugal, France, Italy, and Brazil.

In this Lisbon of intrigues and hidden identities, we encounter a gallery of characters who shape the destiny of Pedro da Silva, an orphan and boarding student at a religious school: Father Dinis, a former libertine aristocrat turned vigilante; a countess consumed by jealousy and thirsting for revenge; a bloodthirsty pirate who becomes a prosperous businessman.

All move through the history of the nineteenth century, accompanying our protagonist’s search for identity.

Pride month is drawing to a close 🏳️‍🌈

Each year, June commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and reminds us of the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals. 🏆

Hungary is the first country in the European Union to ban a pride march. A decision that is far from discouraging Béla, Norbert and Zsu, who march with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets of the capital, a record for Budapest Pride. Although there are hopes for a better future for Hungary’s LGBTQ+ people, the Orban’s government continues to target and stigmatise the community.

It's HOT in Europe right now. 🥵☀️

The continent is currently experiencing record temperatures amid the current heatwave. This week, France 🇫🇷 has endured its hottest day since records began, and the UK 🇬🇧 and Spain 🇪🇸 hit new records for any day in June.

Across the globe, we're seeing extreme heat becoming more and more normal. In 2024, India experienced the longest heatwave in its history. Temperatures soared to over 50°C in the capital, New Delhi, and up to 56°C in Nagpur, in the centre of the country.

It's been 10 years since the Brexit referendum - so what does an independent Britain look like today? 🇬🇧🇪🇺

Since the vote, the country has continued to face instability, with Keir Starmer's resignation this week meaning the nation is now awaiting its seventh Prime Minister in a decade.

Starmer’s successor could well be Andy Burnham, the popular former Mayor of Manchester, nicknamed 'the King of the North'.

Another key player in UK politics right now is Nigel Farage. In 2016, he was one of the main supporters of Brexit in the referendum. Today, his credo is the fight against immigration.
