Over the past week, US President Donald Trump 🇺🇸 has sparked a fresh row with Denmark 🇩🇰 after he appointed a special envoy to Greenland 🇬🇱.

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has made his interest in annexing Greenland clear, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth.

Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has had extensive self-government since 1979, though its defence and foreign policy remain under Danish control.

Opinion polls of Greenlanders show overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the US. But what do they want for their homeland?

Many in Greenland desire to move beyond being an autonomous territory within Denmark's orbit to become a fully independent sovereign state.

Every year, survivors of a refugee tragedy that shook Europe in 2013 meet on Lampedusa.

There, on October 3 2013, a rickety trawler carrying asylum seekers from Eritrea and Somalia capsized a short distance off the island. Only 155 people survived, while 368 people drowned.

Fisherman Vito Fiorino was able to pull 47 people out of the water, saving their lives. Many of those rescued visit their new "father" Vito on the anniversary.
