πΊ A film recommendation: Mysteries of Lisbon (2010)
Mysteries of Lisbon draws the viewer into a perpetual whirlwind of adventures and misadventures, coincidences and revelations, emotions and violent passions, acts of revenge, and thwarted or illicit loves, in a turbulent journey across Portugal, France, Italy, and Brazil.
In this Lisbon of intrigues and hidden identities, we encounter a gallery of characters who shape the destiny of Pedro da Silva, an orphan and boarding student at a religious school: Father Dinis, a former libertine aristocrat turned vigilante; a countess consumed by jealousy and thirsting for revenge; a bloodthirsty pirate who becomes a prosperous businessman.
All move through the history of the nineteenth century, accompanying our protagonistβs search for identity.

Pride month is drawing to a close π³οΈβπ
Each year, June commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and reminds us of the ongoing pursuit of equal justice under the law for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community, as well as the accomplishments of LGBTQ individuals. π
The lessons learned during this month π and the conversations had are worth continuing all year round, so while Pride month ends, we invite you to learn about the issues currently facing the LGBTQ+ community around the world with the below selection of documentaries.
πΊ Queer in OrbΓ‘n's Hungary π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uolqf...
Hungary is the first country in the European Union to ban a pride march. A decision that is far from discouraging BΓ©la, Norbert and Zsu, who march with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets of the capital, a record for Budapest Pride. Although there are hopes for a better future for Hungaryβs LGBTQ+ people, the Orbanβs government continues to target and stigmatise the community.
πΊ Gay Priests Break Their Silence π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sR4g...
Being a priest and living an openly homosexual life is not possible in the Catholic Church. ARTE reporters accompanied several gay priests in France for two years as they went about their daily lives. They speak frankly in front of the camera for the first time.
πΊ Trans in Trump's America π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqYMb...

It's HOT in Europe right now. π₯΅βοΈ
The continent is currently experiencing record temperatures amid the current heatwave. This week, France π«π· has endured its hottest day since records began, and the UK π¬π§ and Spain πͺπΈ hit new records for any day in June.
Across the globe, we're seeing extreme heat becoming more and more normal. In 2024, India experienced the longest heatwave in its history. Temperatures soared to over 50Β°C in the capital, New Delhi, and up to 56Β°C in Nagpur, in the centre of the country.

It's been 10 years since the Brexit referendum - so what does an independent Britain look like today? π¬π§πͺπΊ
Since the vote, the country has continued to face instability, with Keir Starmer's resignation this week meaning the nation is now awaiting its seventh Prime Minister in a decade.
Starmerβs successor could well be Andy Burnham, the popular former Mayor of Manchester, nicknamed 'the King of the North'.
πΊ For more information, check out our explainer 'United Kingdom: Political Instability', here π https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgMY4...
Another key player in UK politics right now is Nigel Farage. In 2016, he was one of the main supporters of Brexit in the referendum. Today, his credo is the fight against immigration.
Farage and his party, Reform UK, had very good results in recent local and regional elections. But his big dream is to become Prime Minister at the next general election.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially kicked off in the US. β½οΈπΊπΈ
This year marks the first time the competition is being held across multiple countries, with games also taking place in Mexico π²π½ and Canada π¨π¦
But, how political really is the βnon-politicalβ game?
Stadium workers in the USA are threatening to strike over Trump's migration policy, while in Uzbekistan, sport has become a state prestige project, and in Bosnia, a fifteen-year-old song has become the unofficial anthem of the World Cup.

Decades of deliberate economic decisions have led to these spectacular inequalities, and Sweden is far from being the only country with these disparities in wealth. πΈ
