These photos might not be saying much so let me explain.
This was exactly 8 years ago today. My Dad was still alive and my parents were about to retire from owning their Dominican bakery that they had owned for over 20 years.
I was fresh out of college and wanted to give the bakery a shot, so I signed up to sell their baked goods at the cityās biggest festival. Peabody International Festival
I spent 2 weeks preparing everything, barely sleeping and on the day of the festival the lines did not stop. So much so that I had to call in my siblings, friends, and dad in to help.
I was selling pastelitos, lemonade, cookies and an arepa that came out so dense that I changed the name and called it ācornbread puddingā. Everyone loved it!
It was a success and a wonderful experience to share with my family. It was also one of the first experiences that I tried out entrepreneurship myself.
That day I learned 3 things
1. When you need help, help will arrive as long as you surround yourself with people you trust and love. 2. I love entrepreneurship as tough as it is 3. The food business is not for me.
I had worked in my parentās business since I was 11 years old and I wanted to carry their legacy. But this day made me realize that it wasnāt my calling, as successful as it was. My gut said āNo Charlene!ā But hey! At least I tried! š¤·š½āāļø
Thereās a pressure that once you start a business you need to go all in. But thatās not the path I chose.
Growing up with parents who were small business owners, I knew the realities of running a business from a young age. I never wanted to get trapped in the hustle culture and stress month after month over whether or not the house AND the business bills were going to get paid.
Iām in the slow and steady race and if I can pay all my bills just from my business, great. Iād probably still work a part-time. Until then, Iām happy going at MY pace.
P.S If youāve ever thought of starting a business but were afraid because you didnāt want to put it all on the line. You CAN do it! Do what works for you but donāt sacrifice your dreams. ā¤ļø
Our New Arrival - The Crown Tie is compact and multifuncional. Take it with you everywhere and use it to create the crown bun on the Afrona, tie up your hair or as a stylish hair accessory.
I had the chance to meet Lisa Price, the founder of Carols Daughter at the World Natural hair show āand she bought an afrona from me!
Lisa is a trailblazer in the curl care industry and has paved the way for so many of us in the natural hair space. To connect in person and share a bit of what Iāve been working on was really special.
Thank you Nicole for connecting us! Lisaās amazing marketing director.
So grateful for the inspiration and the support. This journey is full of surprises š
