These photos might not be saying much so let me explain.
This was exactly 8 years ago today. My Dad was still alive and my parents were about to retire from owning their Dominican bakery that they had owned for over 20 years.
I was fresh out of college and wanted to give the bakery a shot, so I signed up to sell their baked goods at the city’s biggest festival. Peabody International Festival
I spent 2 weeks preparing everything, barely sleeping and on the day of the festival the lines did not stop. So much so that I had to call in my siblings, friends, and dad in to help.
I was selling pastelitos, lemonade, cookies and an arepa that came out so dense that I changed the name and called it “cornbread pudding”. Everyone loved it!
It was a success and a wonderful experience to share with my family. It was also one of the first experiences that I tried out entrepreneurship myself.
That day I learned 3 things
1. When you need help, help will arrive as long as you surround yourself with people you trust and love. 2. I love entrepreneurship as tough as it is 3. The food business is not for me.
I had worked in my parent’s business since I was 11 years old and I wanted to carry their legacy. But this day made me realize that it wasn’t my calling, as successful as it was. My gut said “No Charlene!” But hey! At least I tried! 🤷🏽♀️
