In a landmark moment for Indiaโ€™s semiconductor journey, Odisha marked its entry into high-value chip manufacturing as Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the countryโ€™s first end-to-end Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor production plant. The ambitious project by SiCSem Private Limited, backed by an investment of โ‚น2,067 crore, is set to rise in Bhubaneswarโ€™s Info Valley โ€” laying the foundation for a new era of advanced electronics manufacturing in the state.



Powered by a collaboration with Clas-SiC Wafer Fab Ltd., UK, the facility aims to produce SiC-based compound semiconductors with a capacity of 60,000 wafers annually and 96 million packaged units. These high-performance chips will fuel the technologies of tomorrow โ€” from electric vehicles and solar inverters to missiles, railways, data centers and consumer appliances.



The Chief Minister hailed the project as a transformative step, crediting the India Semiconductor Mission and the Centreโ€™s guidance for turning Odisha into an emerging semiconductor hub. The plant is expected to generate around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs, creating opportunities for engineers, researchers, and skilled workers.



SiCSem is also setting up a โ‚น64-crore Research & Innovation Centre at IIT Bhubaneswar, while Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved โ‚น5 crore from his MPLAD fund to establish the โ€˜NaMo Semiconductor Laboratoryโ€™ at the institute โ€” strengthening the stateโ€™s ecosystem for chip design and next-gen technology development.



With 23 acres allotted by IDCO and the groundbreaking now complete, Odisha has taken its maiden, confident stride into the world of semiconductor manufacturing โ€” a step that positions the state at the forefront of Indiaโ€™s technological future
