Matyas Wolter is a Germany based sitar and surbahar player. His initial training in close ties with his first teacher sitar maestro Pt. Subroto Roy Chowdhury lasted fourteen years of which around five years were spent in his gurus house in Calcutta. After his teachers demise in 2017 Matyas sought further guidance under sarod nawaz Ustad Irfan Muhammad Khan – the head of the Lucknow-Shahjahanpur gharana. Being attracted by masters of yesteryears and traditional formats of raga-interpretation Matyas finds proper guidance and rich nourishment in the extensive and historically-informed repertoire of this gharana and his ustads teaching. Matyas has toured extensively in Europe and India as a soloist on sitar and surbahar as well as a part of his jazz-outlet Pulsar Trio. Furthermore he is taking a lead role in digitizing and archiving the gharanas precious audio collection as a resource for music students and connoisseurs of present and future.
