I would like to wish you all a happy new year! To celebrate the occasion I've dropped a fresh Barberbeats mix, featuring the 2nd Rouge stage, Egg Quarters 🥚! I had a hard time finding a good emoji, so I hope ya'll can appreciate the choice of egg ;). I hope this mix will set the right tone for those listening in going into 2025: may you achieve your goals you've set out for yourself and excel💪.
With Egg Quarters finally covered, we are entering the homestretch of Centurion. Only two stages remain and I hope you are just as excited as I am to see what the series' conclusion will bring.
Please enjoy the mix, and onto a year of great music!
Sup everyone, it's been a while but after a little break we're back with a new mix!
Now that we've completed the 5 Knuckles stages, we move onto the Rouge hunting stages starting with Dry Lagoon 🏝️. I never actually learned how to run anything besides Knuckles so I won't have a lot of interesting things to say about these stages, but while I did a quick 25x I can say with certainty that waiting for those turtles can be a huge timesink if you're unlucky with your pieces (Oasis Jail).
As a small bonus for the chronic listeners, I have compiled all of the mixes for Knuckles' stages into one big compilation: Knuckles Centurion ⏱️. After 5 months in the making, it consists of 62 tracks totaling 5 hours! Even for the most avid enjoyer, it will be difficult to run out of barberbeats now so be sure to check it out ;)
Are you prepared to dodge the constant barrage from outer space in Meteor Herd?☄️☄️☄️
We enter the final Knuckles stage: Meteor Herd. This stage easily beats Pumpkin Hill as the most open and spacious Knuckles level. Due to its vastness, it can often take quite some time to reach specific pieces, making free piece checks crucial to save on time. All the while players have to continuously dodge a constant stream of meteors that can end your run if you're truly unlucky.
With this mix reaching completion, the halfway point for the Centurion series is marked. We now set our sights on the Rouge stages, so be on the lookout!
And lastly, thanks for your patience in waiting for this mix! It took a bit longer to finish as I was out traveling. I hope you all enjoy it :)
Before I get into the nature of this mix/stage, I would like to share the namesake of the "Centurion" series with you all. Inside the SA:2 speedrunning community, a Centurion refers to the category extension where one has to complete every Knuckles stage 20x (for a total of 100 plays, Rouge does this 25x per stage as there are only 4 stages). This category extension exists because single level runs are not representative at all due to the randomness of piece spawn locations. Centurions are also done quite often as practice, since runners tend to neglect learning the Knuckles stages when doing Hero Story attempts.
With that said, we finally arrive at the 4th Knuckles hunting stage! Death Chamber is notorious due its confined nature. Despite having various tricks that allows the player to go out of bounds, this stage usually takes the most time to complete 20x. Coincidentally, runners employ death strats on this stage the most. By intentionally dying after collecting a piece, the runner can return to the starting (red) chamber and rescramble the locations of the remaining pieces, which can save time in some cases. This makes the name very fitting!
For this mix we take a small step back from barberbreaks and return to some good ol' classic Barberbeats. I think this is the most melancholic mix in the Centurion series so far. I tried to group the vibes of each track to one of the 3 main chambers of this stage. Now I wonder... which chamber do you like the most?
Anyways, I hope you all have a nice weekend and enjoy the mix! :)
This is my first time doing a community post so I have no clue how many people will read it, but I thought it would be fun to say a bit more about the creation of this mix.
First of all, I want to thank everyone who joined the channel! I am genuinely surprised by the interest for these mixes, as I just wanted to compile some of my favourite Barberbeat tracks with one of my favourite games I played as a kid. The style of these mixes are heavily inspired by Benjamin G and Hungry Skull, so please check them out if you haven't yet!
As for the mix itself, we finally arrive at Pumpkin Hill! This is the second hunting stage of SA:2, but it is not the 2nd mix I completed. I had an idea for this mix that required some extra time to complete, which is why Pumpkin Hill appears after Aquatic Mine in the Centurion series.
When I heard Oblique Occasions' "maoist landlord" for the first time, I knew I wanted to create a Barberbeat mix that prominently features breaks and elements from DnB. This idea really started to come together when I ran into MICROMECHA's Barberbreaks series, from whom I've sampled most tracks this time around. MICROMECHA is quite a new Barberbeat creator, so be sure to check them out!
As a last word, I have created a discord where people can share barberbeats (and other music they like, or perhaps even their own music?), so come and say hi if you'd like! https://discord.gg/MDvrgtu8eS
