며칠 전에 어떤 외국인이 나한테 오더니 '여기 실내암벽등반 하는 데 어떻게 가요?' 라고 물었다. 난 그의 영어를 바로 알아들었지만 영어가 바로 입에서 나오지 않았다. 나는 더듬으며 '아... 저기 안에 있는 것 같아요' 라고 말했다. 하지만 그의 '감사해요.'라는 대답에 나도 '감사해요.' 라고 대답한 순간 나는 절망하고 말았다. '십년 넘게 영어를 공부했는데도 아직도 내 영어가 이 정도인가?' 라는 생각이 들었다. 며칠 후에 나는 이유를 깨달았다. 내가 평소에 영어를 말하지 않았기 때문이었다. 영어로 된 글을 읽고 영어로 된 영상을 보긴 하지만 정작 말은 하지 않았기 때문이었다. 그러면 어떻게 평소에도 영어를 말할 수 있을까? 영어로 유튜브 영상을 만들고 영어로 글을 쓰는 게 과연 도움이 될까?

A couple of days ago, a foreigner came to me and asked, ‘How can I get to this climbing gym?’. I immediately understood his English, but English didn't come out of my mouth immediately. ‘Umm, I think it's in-inside,’ I stuttered. But at the moment when he replied, ‘Thank you,’ and I replied, ‘Thank you,’ I despaired. I thought 'Even though I've been studying English for over a decade, is this my English? I realized the reason a few days later. It's because I don't speak English regularly. I read English and watch videos in English, but I actually don’t speak it. Then how can I speak English regularly? Can really making YouTube videos in English and writing English be helpful?

북악산 아래에 위치한 삼청각에 다녀왔다. 우리나라 전통 한옥에서 서양식 웨딩을 하는 모습이 어딘가 어색한 느낌이 들었지만, 이제는 너무나도 서양식에 익숙해진 우리로서는 더이상 하얀 드레스를 입어 볼 수 있는 기회를 놓치고 싶지 않는 듯 하다.

I went to SamCheonggak located down Bugaksan Mountain. Having the western wedding in the traditional Korean house looked a little awkward. However, as Koreans have got too used to western-style now, they seem not to want to miss the chance to wear a white wedding dress anymore.

순천만국가정원에서 나는 세계 곳곳의 다양한 정원들을 볼 수 있었다. 그들은 자국의 정치, 철학, 종교, 건축, 예술 등, 그들의 문화를 녹여내어 정원을 만들어 놓고, 그들이 이루어 낸 위대한 업적을 마음껏 뽐내고 있었다. 나는 그곳에서 본인들의 영향력을 세계 곳곳에 퍼뜨리려고 하는 그들의 끊임없는 욕망을 느꼈다.

In Suncheonman National Garden, I saw various gardens all over the world. They have integrated their culture such as politics, philosophy, religion, architecture and art into the gardens and they have showing off their great achievements. I felt there their insatiable desire to spread their influence throughout the world.

과거에는 이런 멋진 곳에 오면 그저 풍경을 즐기기에 바빴다. 하지만, 이제는 '이런 곳은 어떻게 만들어졌을까?' '얼마나 많은 사람들이 노고를 들었을까?' 라는 생각을 하게 된다. 나이를 먹다보니, 점점 내 주변의 많은 것들이 다 누군가의 시간과 노력으로 만들어졌다는 것을 느끼게 되는 것 같다.

When I visited such a wonderful spot in the past, I just used to enjoy the scenery, but, today, I come to think 'How was such a place built?' and 'How many people did make hard efforts?'. As I get older, I feel many things around me were all maded by someone's times and efforts.
