While often associated with pop-leaning reggae, Ruffin’s career stretched across rocksteady and early reggae, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Techniques and The Shades.
He found his biggest international success with “Rain” and “Mad About You”, but his wider body of work is well worth exploring.
Born Cecil Thomas in Fruitful Ville, Portland, Jamaica, in 1944, he first made a name for himself with “Run Nigel Run”, produced by Derrick Harriott.
The track became a major success, earning Thomas the nickname “Mr. Nigel” and helping him take an important step in his life as he was able to purchase his first home in Kingston.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Leighton ‘Pluto’ Shervington first made his mark as part of the show band Tomorrow’s Children in the late 1960s. Following the group’s split, he embarked on a successful solo career, becoming known for tracks including “Your Honour”, “Ram Goat Liver”, “Dat” and “I Man Born Ya”.

Out now - Intensified Sounds: The Beverley’s Rock Steady Singles 1967–1968 digs into another essential chapter from the legendary Beverley’s label, bringing together a mix of well-loved hits and harder-to-find gems.
The fourth instalment in the exclusive Trojan x Music On Vinyl compilation series, the collection has been curated by Laurence Cane-Honeysett, who also provides the liner notes.
