Established in 2010, the Johnny Leroy Dawkins Jr Scholarship Fund was created by mom, Angela, and sister, Dia, of Johnny Leroy "Lee-Lee" Dawkins, Jr. who was tragically murdered due to gun violence at the age of 25. Determined to turn pain into purpose, Angela & Dia started this grassroots organization w/ an annual fish fry fundraiser to raise funds to award scholarships to senior males - African American, Indigenous and People of Color - graduating from Lexington Senior High School (where the entire family also graduated) to honor their loved one, help the community and stand against gun violence. The JLD Scholarship Fund is now an incorporated nonprofit 501c3 and has awarded over $15,000 from just the support of family, friends and the community alone and the support keeps growing!
This channel is intended to document "The Making of a Nonprofit" and all the things we have learned, and are still learning, along our journey becoming incorporated as a nonprofit 501c3 and beyond!
