Sharing real life on a small homestead. We try to live a more simple and frugal life and teach our children valuable skills in hopes of continuing the homesteading lifestyle into future generations.

We are a family of 6 and our latest journey is about moving to Alaska where me and my husband grew up. So in a few months we will pack up our south Carolina homestead and start the journey of restarting a new homestead in Alaska.

I hope you find this channel a calming space to come for inspiration and encouragement.

Thank you for being here.
Anna

Crazy Tromboncino squash harvest, that we got from our tiny garden last stummer, is still providing food for us into February. We are trying to go through as much of our stored food as we can before the move to Alaska so we don't waste any or have to get rid of it. We can take some with us but there is still a lot in the pantry that we need to eat. Good problem to have πŸ₯°

P.S.
The next video is almost ready!

Would you give this broody some eggs? We are moving in just over 3 months and I will have to rehome my entire flock in just 2 months from now. I'm considereding giving her some pure Black Copper Marans eggs to hatch out. I could probably make a little extra cash for buying new birds up in Alaska by selling the chicks and momma together... I have these pretty BCM eggs that would otherwise be eaten. What would you all my chicken people do? I know I said I wasn't going to add any new projects before the move, but this little hen really would be doing all the work πŸ˜…

Tip for getting your kids to love chicken chores. Get them some sweet cuddly silkies they can call their own! This boy has raised these guys from eggs. He has done everything from feeding to cleaning out their living space and they are the only chickens he never complains about taking care of. They have been handled so much that they are super friendly and everyone that visits our homestead becomes quickly attached to them. One of the best kid friendly chickens we've owned so far!

What are your favorite kid friendly chicken breeds?

Making pelmeni ( Russian ravioli ) on a rainy day. This is one of those homemade dishes that takes a lot of time but is a favorite on our homestead, so it's good to have help 😊 It is a great dish to prepare and freeze for an easy meal on a busy weekend!

Do you have a favorite dish that takes a long time to prepare?

Coyotes have been hanging around our property but a few of the girls refuse to stay in. Time to trim the wings again so they don't fly out!

Yesterday's snow storm and today after the southern heat of the south carolina sun! The homestead has mostly melted off and we can soon start focusing a little more on going through our sheds and things on the property that we can start getting rid of before moving to AK.

The second winter storm is here. Our homestead was transformed into a resemblece of Alaska this morning! Thankfully no power outages yet. The kids are enjoying the snow while the chickens took most of the day to get enough courage to venture out just just a tiny bit πŸ˜„

My lucky camp stove. As soon as I give in and and go buy this stove for cooking, the electricity cames back on! But we might still need it yet, they are calling for more snow and low temperatures this weekend. Seems South Carolina is determined to show us it can compete with Alaska before we abandon it for our home state.

I feel a huge sigh of relief from the local communities for the power restoration as many people were stranded and alone with no heat during these frigid temps. But now it seems the overwhelming anticipation is building up with a new storm coming.

Although this may seem like not a big deal to the people up north, for a state that does not normally experience this kind of weather it can be a huge deal. The folks down here are just not as prepared.

There are still some people left without electricity, yet the new storm is just days away.

Please keep everyone in your prayers.
