Sharing real life on a small homestead. Chicken keeping, gardening and preserving food are just a few of many things we do here.

We are a family of 6 and our latest journey is about moving to Alaska where me and my husband grew up. So in a few months we will pack up our south Carolina homestead and start the journey of restarting a new homestead in Alaska.

I hope you find this channel a calming space to come for inspiration and encouragement.

Thank you for being here.

Bak Homestead

Chicken preserving continues. Meat is done, now to bone broth. This is taking way longer than expected especially with little kiddos underfoot trying to help. I could also really use a second canner to make this faster 😅

Canning the the dual-purpose chickens we just butchered. We have way more meat than I expected and a lot of delicious chicken stock. This has been a multi-day process and it will probably take me another day before I am done. But I sure enjoy it! If everything goes well, I will have a video about this to share with you soon!

First #silkie egg after almost 9 months of raising these sweet little birds! Right before I am about to rehome them as we prepare to head out to Alaska. The good news is, they are going to a lifelong friend of mine that is going to breed tham and continue to raise more silkies just like I had planned on doing with these adorable guys.

While chicken organ meat might not be everyone's cup of tea, we consider it a rare delicacy. During chicken processing, I managed to save most of the hearts and livers. Fried in some oil with salt and pepper and served with fried onion and spicy ketchup! A side dish packed with vitamins and nutrients 🙌

Processed 22 chickens on my own 😅 Next step is to pressure can the meat! I am so excited to restock our chicken meat supply. I had just pulled out the last 2 chickens out of our freezer that we processed about 7 months ago.

Finishing one of the projects that needed to be done before moving to Alaska in a few months. I'm hoping we have enough to take with us.

Anyone else raise heritage, dual-purpose chickens for meat??

A barred rock hen has been giving me speckled eggs. If you know me, you know I love breeding chickens for egg color and speckles 😊 Who else is crazy enough to care about these kind of things?

I sure will miss my chickens when we go to move to Alaska! But I am already making plans on what breeds I will get once we get up there!

Bak Homestead

Crazy Tromboncino squash harvest, that we got from our tiny garden last stummer, is still providing food for us into February. We are trying to go through as much of our stored food as we can before the move to Alaska so we don't waste any or have to get rid of it. We can take some with us but there is still a lot in the pantry that we need to eat. Good problem to have 🥰

P.S.
The next video is almost ready!

Would you give this broody some eggs? We are moving in just over 3 months and I will have to rehome my entire flock in just 2 months from now. I'm considereding giving her some pure Black Copper Marans eggs to hatch out. I could probably make a little extra cash for buying new birds up in Alaska by selling the chicks and momma together... I have these pretty BCM eggs that would otherwise be eaten. What would you all my chicken people do? I know I said I wasn't going to add any new projects before the move, but this little hen really would be doing all the work 😅
