Founded in 1926 as Brunswick Gramophone House, Gallo Record Company is South Africa’s oldest and most influential record label. It played a pioneering role in shaping the country’s music industry, establishing the first pressing plant and distributing local and international artists. Through the 1964 merger of Gallo Africa and G.R.C., it became the dominant force in African music, holding one of the largest catalogs, including mbaqanga, jazz, gospel, and pop. Gallo has signed and distributed legendary artists such as Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Lucky Dube, and Mango Groove. It partnered with global labels like Decca, Polydor, and Warner Music, expanding African music’s reach worldwide. Now owned by Arena Holdings, with DJ Black Coffee as a shareholder, Gallo continues to evolve, preserving its rich legacy while embracing digital transformation. With nearly a century of history, it remains a leader in discovering, producing, and promoting African music globally.
