"Not the least of the problems in the Saturn V system is logistics," said Arthur Rudolph in 1966, speaking as the Director of MSFC's Saturn V Program Office.
Saturn V really taught NASA a lesson in logistics. The complexity of transporting all the parts required to assemble the rocket was truly nightmarish, with over 20000 contractors and subcontractors from all over the country who supplied hundreds of thousands of individual parts for the Saturn V.
This and more I will discuss in my next deep dive!
Hello SB fans! Since I oftentimes find myself wondering what kind of videos you'd rather watch, I figured it would be wisest to simply ask you. I'd like to make news videos covering recent developments in the space industry (news about NASA, SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, Astra, ESA, China, Russia, etc..), although these videos wouldn't cover as much Starship development as WAI, Lab Padre or Marcus House do, but rather the most recent happenings, without going too much in detail. Similarly, I'd also like to make news videos about deep space missions (Webb, Juno, Parker, etc.) Also, sprinkled in between, I'd like to make short (~10-15min) deep dives into diverse space topics, i.e., "The problem with rotating spacecraft:..." or "How to refuel a Starship on Mars."
So, according to Musk, it took ~40 seconds from activation of the FTS until Starship finally broke up...What a beast! SpaceX will have to get bigger explosives.
While Starship did damage its launch pad, it was not the first rocket to do so. 🧨🚀 In my upcoming video, I will discuss other rocket launches that went wrong and ravaged their launch pads, including how long it took to repair them. Can you guess what failed rocket launch caused the explosion shown in the image below?
This is the flame deflector used for the Apollo 5 mission, with the Saturn IB AS-204 sitting above it. Will SpaceX use something similar to this? If so, it would have to fit between the OLM legs and be removable so as to keep access to the booster's engines when needed.
I will be discussing flame deflectors in my upcoming video and how SpaceX might use them for Starship launches.
Word is going around that the Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) on Booster 7 got killed by the debris and that is why stage separation never happened. Despite this, B7 still tried to do the flip maneuver + boost back with Ship 24 attached.
Still does not explain why the rocket started flipping at around 2:20 when stage separation should have occurred around 30 secs later.
Maybe SpaceX gave the command to separate earlier so as to at least fire up Ship 24 and gather data from it since B7 was too damaged already anyway?

More images rolling in...this time by ‪@RGVAerialPhotography‬.
In this photo we can see an entire concrete slab leaning onto the helium tanks.
We are just starting to uncover the real consequences of not having a flame diverter in place...

Oh my god!
We had not yet seen the true extent of the damage underneath the orbital launch mount;
Look at what Starship did!!
Found it on Twitter.
