Word is going around that the Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) on Booster 7 got killed by the debris and that is why stage separation never happened. Despite this, B7 still tried to do the flip maneuver + boost back with Ship 24 attached.
Still does not explain why the rocket started flipping at around 2:20 when stage separation should have occurred around 30 secs later.
Maybe SpaceX gave the command to separate earlier so as to at least fire up Ship 24 and gather data from it since B7 was too damaged already anyway?
