Melbourne’s Broadway Sounds are as colourful and eclectic as their name suggests. Threading disparate and unexpected styles and genres together in a way that on paper shouldn’t make any sense, the trio have launched their vibrant pop through a swathe of critically acclaimed releases. One minute it’s Earth Wind & Fire funk with a dash of Mantronix (Exclusive Love / Digital Influence), the next it’s deft afro-pop along the lines of Sir Victor Uwaifo and Frances Bebey blasted through with trap-rap brass horns (Sing It Again). With touches of psych, Italo disco, kwela jazz, and township jive, Broadway Sounds pay homage to some of music’s richest lineages, while creating a sound both provocative and new in its own right.
