SAMARTH Mission (National Biomass Mission)

The Ministry of Power set up a National Mission on the use of Biomass in coal-based thermal power plants, also known as SAMARTH mission. Since its inception in July 2021, the SAMARTH Mission has been is working tirelessly to strengthen the biomass co-firing initiative of GoI. The SAMARTH Mission has been created under MoP as a one-shot solution to multiple problems being faced in disposal of surplus biomass. While conversion of biomass into pellets and firing them in Thermal Power Plants would save the environment from harmful effects of stubble burning, it will also contribute to electricity generation and reduce the country’s dependence on coal. The initiative is also likely to benefit all stakeholders in the biomass value chain including the farmers and decrease the carbon footprint of the country.
The National Mission on biomass will also contribute to the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
