September 22nd marks the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid. The inaugural 1985 event was hosted by Willie Nelson, Neil Young, and John Mellencamp and featured a star-studded lineup of over 60 artists, including Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, and Johnny Cash, and drew a crowd of 80,000 people, raising over $7 million for farmers. The annual festival continues to raise awareness about the struggles family farmers face and supports community based land efforts. Historic Films can make available clips of many of the performers from the era, including this one of Willie Nelson from 1983.

Makes me want to cry - this, for me, the most moving version of this anthem of equality and peace - shot with no light, on a hand held 16mm camera by photographer and all around great guy George Pickow ( husband of Folk icon Jean Richie) in 1963- pass it on !
