I’m Heather and I love making YouTube videos because it’s fun! I started creating on YouTube in April 2016 to document my journey of starting my business. I had no idea what I was doing but I felt like I would regret it if I didn’t give myself the chance to try.

I've been a full time content creator for years. I met the love of my life through YouTube as well as so many incredible people all around the world. YouTube helped me to discover my creative side that I didn’t realize was there. Making that first video and starting this journey has really been the most empowering thing I’ve ever done.

Here I share the fun and excitement of being a YouTube creator like making cool videos, connecting with people online, running a digital business, and trying new and creative techniques. I think it’s incredible that this tool exists and if you want to give yourself the chance to try, I want to help!

EXCITING NEWS! 🤩 i’m so proud and thrilled to share that my husband, ‪@tombuck‬, has been shortlisted as a finalist for the ‪@rodemic‬ Creator of the Year awards!! creators have been judged based on the following criteria: audio quality, visual quality, personality and originality. and there’s also a People’s Choice Award where YOU can vote for a creator in each category. tom is in Gear & Tech Reviews!

tom and i happened to meet right before he started his youtube journey. check out this email he sent me on August 20, 2017:

“Don't know even where to begin on this one, but I feel like it's important for me to actually push myself towards building my own YouTube channel. You gave me the kick in the pants I needed, and on top of that, if my 11 year old self knew that I could make movies and share them with LITERALLY THE ENTIRE WORLD FOR FREE, but I wasn't doing it, he'd be pretty disappointed and confused.

Money/subscribers/views aren't the goal. Obviously there's a certain sweet spot I'd like to hit where it doesn't feel totally pointless, but beyond that, I'm mostly tired of being a creator who doesn't create, and to tie it into work, it will help me better understand the thing I teach.

In your opinion, why would anyone want to watch? What would be an effective way to frame my story/perspective/ideas/whateveryouwanttocallit? I definitely do want to keep things genuine and authentic.”

tom, it brings a tear to my eye to know that both your 11 year old self and your 2017 self would be so proud of where you are now. 🥹 you did it. you ARE doing it.👏🏼 you gave yourself the chance. you pushed through. you never gave up. every day, you inspire me with how dedicated and creative you are. you really do light up when you are teaching, empowering, and sharing your excitement. it’s been the greatest joy to be a part of your journey. 💜

tom is gear focused but ever since he was a high school teacher, it’s always been about helping people use these tools to discover their voice, share their passion, and connect with others. since he started his channel, he’s made over 500 videos! to be a finalist is a huge milestone and if you’d like to support tom, here’s the link! geni.us/tomrode

an update 🙂 For the past 6 years, most of the content I’ve created has been about content creation and the creator economy. But this year, I’ve been feeling… disconnected? Tired? I feel like so much of the conversation has been about racing to be the biggest and the best, feeding algorithms, optimizing processes for maximum exposure, and the never-ending chase towards incomprehensibly large numbers.

Content creation started to feel exhausting and before I knew it, I found myself avoiding it all.

At first, I thought it was burnout because that’s the default reason for every creator struggle it seems. But it’s wasn’t.

A few months ago, my brother finally convinced me to play Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve avoided it for years because even though I’m a lifelong gamer, I didn’t want to play an MMO.

But I decided to give it a shot and not even exaggerating, it’s been life-changing.

This freakin’ game has reinvigorated the fire in me, to the point where I FINALLY decided to bring my long-time dream for a YouTube gaming channel to life: HeatherJustPlay.

And I can’t stop thinking about making more videos. That ITCH is back. The spark of creativity where ideas wake me up in the middle of the night, where I’m excited to see what I can come up with.

Working on HeatherJustPlay has reminded me about the MAGIC of YouTube, the thing that brought me and Tom together, the reason I became a YouTube coach in the first place.

This potential of being able to share your enthusiasm with other people who get it. THIS is what it’s about. It’s such a special thing that this platform allows us to connect with people we would never otherwise meet (FOR FREE) and in the past month, I’ve felt like I’ve made so many new friends who love video games as much as I do.

So I’m hanging up the HeatherJustCreate/YouTube coach hat for a while and going all in on HeatherJustPlay. It makes me happy. It’s creatively challenging. It’s fun.

And it feels right. It feels like everything was leading up to this and I’m so grateful. I can’t wait to see what happens next! :)
