Astomos Energy Corporation and #NYK Line have completed a pilot on the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier Lycaste Peace (owned by NYK Line and chartered by Astomos), bunkering FAME B24 marine biofuel in Singapore. The test voyage was completed on February 26. The demonstration is part of a project to establish an assurance framework for the supply chain of sustainable biofuels led by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), a non-profit organization in Singapore that aims to support the decarbonisation of the shipping industry.
In this demonstration test, Astomos and NYK Line, together with the biofuel bunker supplier, proved that the sustainable biofuels in this case is traceable along the supply chain, by tracking the transportation of biofuel from the place of production to Singapore, blending the biofuel with conventional fuels, the site of bunkering, and management of the blended fuels.

On February 15, #NYK has concluded a time charter contract with Siemens Gamesa, the world-leading provider of wind power solutions, for a crew transport vessel (CTV) for an offshore wind power generation facility.
The CTV will be owned by NYK and managed by Hokkaido-based Hokuyo Kaiun Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company. The vessel will be engaged in transporting workers to the offshore wind power generation facility at Ishikari Bay New Port, which is scheduled to begin commercial operation in December 2023.

#NYK Line, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. and IHI Corporation received an Approval in Principle (AiP) on December 26, 2022 from ClassNK for an ammonia floating storage and regasification barge (A-FSRB).
At this time, there are no international regulations for floating storage and regasification facilities when the cargo is #ammonia, and it is expected that the unique requirements of ammonia will have to be reflected in the design. Therefore, the parties and ClassNK conducted a comprehensive risk identification of various contingencies and worked to identify technical issues from the initial study stage. A risk identification was conducted using the gap analysis method, which identifies differences between conventional ships and offshore floating facilities (heavy oil, LNG, etc.) and evaluates the impact of such differences.
As a result, the parties extracted items for future technical studies of possible accidental incidents and differences between conventional ships and offshore floating facilities and obtained an AiP from ClassNK. This is the world's first acquisition of an AiP for an A-FSRB handling ammonia as cargo.
The parties will continue to study the arrangement and introduction of A-FSRBs with electric power companies, which are expected to be the main users of A-FSRBs, and to study legal compliance. Additionally, the parties will work on economic evaluation in parallel.
On November 21, #NYK and JERA Co., Inc. signed a MoU to study the transportation of fuel #ammonia. The study will include examining the transport of fuel ammonia to the Hekinan Thermal Power Plant, where JERA aims to begin using fuel ammonia in commercial operations in the late 2020s.
In order to procure fuel ammonia in large volume for power generation at a lower cost, it is necessary to increase the size of ships for transportation. The MoU provides for the two companies to jointly study the development of enlarged fuel ammonia carriers and the establishment of a safe transportation system. Specifically, the MoU stipulates that the following items will be studied:
・Development of fuel ammonia carriers suitable for domestic thermal power plants and receiving terminals
・Establishment of a system for transporting and receiving fuel ammonia
・Implementation and operation of ammonia-fueled propulsion systems for vessels
・Working with related parties to formulate rules for the reception of fuel ammonia
NYK has reached a basic agreement to invest in PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a shipping subsidiary of PT Pertamina (Persero), a state-owned oil and gas company based in Indonesia. The parties plan to conclude an investment agreement and complete the investment by the end of 2022.
Through this investment, NYK plans to conclude a long-term strategic partnership agreement with PIS and will collaborate with PIS in a wide range of businesses, including those associated with crude oil, petroleum products, LNG transportation, floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).
On September 27, #NYK received AiP from ClassNK for an #ammonia bunkering vessel that is currently being researched and developed. This is the first time in Japan that a shipping company has independently obtained AiP for an #ABV from ClassNK.
NYK’s Project Engineering Team (PET)— established on October 1, 2021, within the Technical Group of NYK — was in charge of creating the various drawings necessary to obtain the AiP from ClassNK. PET created its own design drawings instead of relying on those that had previously been made by shipyards and design companies and used an advanced method of creating 3D models linked to the drawings in the initial conceptual design stage. 3D modeling is usually done in the detailed design stage after the shipbuilding contract has been signed. The 3D models enabled for more in-depth discussions to take place about risk assessments of hazardous locations and escape routes during the HAZID (Hazard Identification Study) in the process of obtaining the AiP and allowed for specifications that incorporate sufficient safety measures against the toxicity and corrosiveness of ammonia to be devised.
On September 6, #NYK signed a multi-year time charter contract with Osaka Gas International Transport Inc. (President: Takenori Fujita, Head office: Osaka), a Daigas Group company, for a new #LNG carrier.
This vessel, named “Grace Freesia,” comes equipped with a WinGD-made dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine (i.e., X-DF diesel engine) that has superior fuel-consumption efficiency and can operate on marine gas oil or boil off gas stored in the cargo tank. The carrier also features a re-liquefaction system that can use surplus boil-off gas efficiently. The cargo tank is a 174,000 cubic meter capacity membrane-type tank that makes use of advanced insulating materials to suppress the boil-off rate (percentage of gas volume that vaporizes during navigation) in the cargo tank and realizes significantly more efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly operation.

Stellar Harmony, a dedicated wood-chip carrier, was delivered at the shipyard of Iwagi Zosen Co., Ltd., a member of the Imabari Shipbuilding Group. The vessel will transport environmentally and socially conscious wood chips mainly from New Zealand, Australia, North America, and South America under a long-term contract between NYK and Marusumi Paper Co., Ltd. The ship will also pump in seawater along its routes to collect #microplastics floating in the ocean. The collected microplastics will be unloaded and analyzed by the Chiba Institute of Technology and used for research to clarify the actual distribution of microplastics in the ocean.

現時点において、貨物をアンモニアとした場合の浮体式貯蔵再ガス化設備に関する国際的に統一された条約や規則等は存在しないため、アンモニア特有の要件を設計へ反映することが求められると予想されます。そのため、3社と日本海事協会は、様々な偶発的事象に対する包括的なリスクを特定し、初期検討段階から技術課題の洗い出しに取り組みました。リスク特定に際しては、従来の船舶や浮体構造物(重油・LNG等)との差分を特定しその影響評価を行う手法(ギャップ分析法)を用いてリスクの特定を進めました。
その結果、想定される偶発的事故や従来の船舶や浮体構造物との差分に対する今後の技術検討項目を抽出し、日本海事協会からAiPを取得しました。アンモニアを貨物として取り扱うA-FSRBのAiPの取得は世界初となります。
