शिव पुराण के अनुसार, जो वृषभों के राजा महातेजस्वी, महान् मेघ के समान शब्द करनेवाले, मेरु, मन्दराचल, कैलास और हिमालय के शिखर की भाँति ऊँचे एवं उज्ज्वल वर्ण वाले हैं, श्वेत बादलों के शिखर की भाँति ऊँचे ककुद्से शोभित हैं, महानागराज (शेष)-के शरीर की भाँति पूँछ जिनकी शोभा बढ़ाती है, जिनके मुख, सींग और पैर भी लाल हैं, नेत्र भी प्रायः लाल ही हैं, जिनके सररे अंग मोटे और उन्नत हैं, जो अपनी मनोहर चालसे बड़ी शोभा पाते हैं, जिनमें उत्तम लक्षण विद्यमान हैं, जो चमचमाते हुए मणिमय आभूषणों से विभूषित हो अत्यन्त दीप्तिमान् दिखायी देते हैं, जो भगवान् शिवको प्रिय हैं और शिवमें ही अनुरक्त रहते हैं, शिव और शिवा दोनों के ही जो ध्वज और वाहन हैं तथा उनके चरणों के स्पर्श से जिनका पृष्ठभाग परम पवित्र हो गया है, जो गौओं के राज पुरुष हैं, वे श्रेष्ठ और चमकीला त्रिशूल धारण करने वाले नन्द्रिकेश्वर वृषभ शिव और शिवा की आज्ञा शिरोधार्य करके मुझे अभीष्ट वस्तु प्रदान करें
May that excellent Bull, "Nandikeshwara" - who bears a shining trident - grant me my desired wish, having bowed to the commands of Shiva and Shivaa (Goddess Parvati).
He is the "King of Bulls", immensely radiant, and roars like a great thundercloud. He is as tall as the peaks of Mount Meru, Mandara, Kailash, and the Himalayas, and possesses a bright white complexion.
He is adorned with a high hump resembling the peak of a white cloud, and his beauty is enhanced by a tail that resembles the body of the Great Serpent King (Shesha). His face, horns, and hooves are red, and his eyes are also tinged with red.
His limbs are stout and prominent, and he looks magnificent with his captivating gait. He possesses all auspicious marks and appears extremely luminous, adorned with sparkling gem-studded ornaments.
He is dear to Lord Shiva and remains devoted to Shiva alone. He is both the emblem (flag) and the vehicle of Shiva and Shivaa, and his back has become supremely sanctified by the touch of their feet. He is the noble leader among all cattle.
