A lifelong beginner helping you try something new and get outside 🌱

Hi, I’m Elliot, the person behind Fareweld.

Years of doomscrolling, climate anxiety, and real-life stress left me feeling anxious, overwhelmed, and stuck. I had no passions, no life purpose, and no path forward, and I kept feeling like I'd missed my chance to be really good at something.

It's still a work in progress, but I'm slowly realising that you don't need to be perfect to start something new, and you can just dip your toes in. It’s not about picking one big passion in life, but being a jack of all trades and turning over a new leaf every day.

I hope this helps you feel a bit less anxious, more curious, and encourages you to try something new! :-)

Thank you for the love on my latest video (I tried wildlife photography for a month) 📷 💚

I've had some requests to carry on with photography content so I thought I'd throw this post out there as a call for video suggestions! Let me know what you'd like to see, or what you want to know :-)

So this has been about 6 months in the making... I bet it wasn't what you were expecting huh? 🤪

This video was very out of my comfort zone, and I had to get my partner Sam to force me to publish it, so please don't eat me alive in the comments.

Check it out now on my channel. Hope you enjoy!

Happy new year pals! Hope you all had an amazing holiday / new year and managed to take some time for yourself to relax and have fun 💚

Just wanted to check in with you as I’ve started the year with a lot of reflection (as you do), and I’ve been questioning the direction of this channel. Hiking and nature and getting outside have been a huge part of my life, and that’s not going anywhere, BUT there are other aspects of my life that I’d love to share with you too.

My biggest ‘hobby’ I suppose is simply trying new things, and I love being a beginner and sharing that learning process. While I’m by no means a hiking expert now (not even close), I do feel like I’ve learnt and shared a lot, and I worry that I’m running out of steam a bit.

My favourite videos to make are the experiments (like my ‘I tried thrifting hiking gear’ video), and I’d love to lean into that format with a broader lens. In my ideal world I think I’d be making an ‘I tried’ video for every new, random hobby I picked up (could be anything from trying a new sport to decluttering my life), but I realise that 99% of you are here for the hiking and I wouldn’t want to alienate you from the channel by being off-topic.

So I suppose my questions are…
Would you watch a broader range of content from me… Or are you just here for the hiking? If you are interested in other videos from me, should I upload them here or start a new channel? Let me know what you think, just out here testing the waters 🦦

If you read all of that well done and thank you, hope you’re having a great day x

Just realised I never made a community post about this video! Check it out if you want a little behind the scenes look at a big group doing the three peaks challenge, plus a lil solo hike in the Scottish highlands with me :-)

I always get comments from people asking for more hiking vlogs, but they never do as well as my other videos! I’ll still make them because I absolutely love doing it, but maybe they need to have a more ‘challenge’ aspect to them to keep people interested… My charity shop hiking challenge has been one of my favourites!

Let me know what you think… maybe I just need to shout about them a bit more with these community posts!

Hey pals, I need your help for a video I’m working on! I’m exploring the use of down in the outdoors industry and want to hear your thoughts about it.

Do you think about the ethics? Worry about the birds that are used? Does it affect your choice in brand? Or maybe you care more about performance? Do you have a strong preference for either down or synthetic insulation? Feel free to answer any of these or drop any thoughts you have about down and synthetic insulation below please! I might feature it in the video 🪶

In return I offer you this picture of a Greylag goose I took recently 🪿 quack

🚨 NEW VIDEO ALERT + eye update 🚨

This is a fun one, I love a lil challenge!

Just a note - this was all filmed (and mostly edited) before my eye injury. The good news though, is that I am healing up really well! I’m not in any pain now which is AMAZING, and while I still can’t see well enough to read normally with my left eye, my vision is getting good enough that it isn’t affecting my right eye too much. I saw an optician the other day to see how I’m doing healing wise and it’s looking like my vision should still improve 🤞 I’m going back to see them this weekend so hopefully we can compare photos and notes to see if I actually am progressing - I’ll let ya know how it goes.

Thank you all so so much for the kind words and recommendations to keep me sane last week, it really meant a lot! Feeling very grateful to be building this community 💚

Health update 👁️❌

Hey pals, just wanted to let you know that I’ve managed to injure myself in the comfort of my own home of all places… Basically, I got a load of self raising flour in my eye and because I didn’t wash it straight away (learn from my mistake here) I have given myself something called a corneal abrasion (example pic below similar to what mine looked like). I’ve been in a lot of pain for the past couple of days, can’t open my eye for longer than a few seconds, and perhaps more worrying (although less at the forefront of my mind right now) is that when I *can* open the eye my vision is pretty dire. Also the doctor who examined me went “oh that’s HUUUUGE” which didn’t sound ideal lmao.

Things are on the up though, i’ve been examined and sent home with 4 different kinds of eye drops that I can’t pronounce, and the pain is a lot more manageable! I’ll be taking it easy for the next few days and will be going back in to the eye casualty unit to check my healing progress next week - I’ll let you know how it goes. This does mean that I’m probably going to be pretty slow on the replying to comments and uploading front as, while my right eye is totally fine, it’s still uncomfortable to use annoyingly. Would love to have independent chameleon eyes right now.

ANYWAY, don’t worry about me, I’m being very well looked after, but please do supply me with any podcast / video essay / audiobook recommendations - I need as many auditory distractions as possible! Also, if you want more updates I’ll probably be posting more regularly over on my Instagram stories, so feel free to follow over there (@fareweld) if you want to keep up to date with my recovery stuff.

Thank you for all of the support on my last post and videos in general, and (hopefully) I’ll see you soon!! 💚
