Since Dr. Jane Goodall’s historic journey to Tanzania at age 26 to study chimpanzees in their natural habitat, she has paved the way for generations of future humanitarian leaders to forge their own path. Her life-long work as a renowned ethologist, conservationist, and animal advocate, has been a tour de force of compassion and a benefit to our entire planet. 🌍 In partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, ‪@Barbie‬ is proud to introduce Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and UN Messenger of Peace, as the newest honoree in our Inspiring Women series – and the first doll in the collection made from recycled ocean-bound plastic. Like all wildlife, chimpanzees have a very SPECIAL role to play in their habitats! Chimpanzees mostly eat fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Because of this they help disperse seeds throughout their ecosystems. Some seeds that chimpanzees consume are too large for most other wildlife to eat, so chimpanzees help these important plants thrive. While Dr. Goodall began her groundbreaking study on chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, chimpanzees are also endemic to ecosystems across many countries in Africa across the "chimpanzee range" including Gabon, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cameroon. JGI's work supports conservation and other efforts across much of this region. Wherever chimpanzees live, they have a pivotal role to play, unique cultures, and innate value. That's why it is important that we make sure they have hopeful futures - unfortunately, chimpanzees have already disappeared from several countries... But you can do something about it!

Who's this fan favorite? it's Kabi!! Kabi arrived at JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary in 2018 after being rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. The illegal trade in wildlife is a major threat to chimpanzees who are endangered, with only less than between 100,000-300,000 remaining in the wild.

Fueling the illegal wildlife trade is the inappropriate videos and imagery of great apes in the media and social media, which diminishes understanding of their endangered status, and fuels the pet trade. You can do something to end illegal wildlife trade. Always remember to keep chimpanzees #ForeverWild to #sharewithcare only #apepropriate posts. To find out which posts are good, and which are not, and how you can stop the illegal trade while also supporting the care of chimpanzees like Kabi, read more news.janegoodall.org/2020/02/17/is-that-social-med…

In 1960, Dr. Goodall first arrived on the shores of lake Tanganyika, Tanzania to study wild chimpanzees - but did you know for almost as long there have been researchers studying baboons in Gombe as well? The Gombe baboon study is a groundbreaking longitudinal study run by Dr. Anthony Collins, and the emergent findings have shaped better understanding of baboon ecology, species interactions, zoonotic disease and more! Did you also know that chimpanzees are great apes, vs baboons which are monkeys? A good way to tell is to TAIL the difference (chimpanzees and great apes like humans don't have tails, monkeys do!)

It's snack time! Perrine and her friends love to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, figs, nuts, and seeds. At JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary in Republic of the Congo, rescued chimpanzees like Perrine are integrated into groups depending on their needs. Young chimpanzees including Perrine and her friends Zeze, Vienna, and George need time to develop important social and behavioral skills with others close in age... so this group is called the Nursery Group! Perrine was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade in 2019. Today she is THRIVING! In December 2021, our JGI team released a video all about Perrine's story... check out "Get to Know Perrine's Tchimpounga Sanctuary Story of Hope" -> youtube.com/watch?v=i53c4...

You can support chimpanzees like Perrine by becoming a Chimpanzee Guardian today. Through the expert care of JGI staff, and the generous support of people just like you, Tchimpounga is a second chance for chimpanzees who have suffered.

Wounda is one of the most famous chimpanzee residents at JGI's Tchimpounga sanctuary, and there's good reason! She's an incredibly resilient, inspiring chimpanzee. 😊 Today Wounda lives on Tchindzoulou Island, one of JGI's three sanctuary islands, where she enjoys a happy life as alpha female with her son, aptly named Hope. Kefan, the alpha male of Wounda's group, and Wounda are very close and together they maintain a peaceful community.

In December of 2021, our JGI team published a series of videos on the eight chimpanzees of our Chimpanzee Guardian program. If you love Wounda and want to learn more about her and her story, check out "Get to Know Wounda's Tchimpounga Sanctuary Story of Hope" -> youtube.com/watch?v=i53c4EIbHpo

Dr. Goodall is often asked whether she has a favorite chimpanzee, and the answer is a very special chimpanzee named David Greybeard! David was the very first individual to trust Jane when she began her observations in Gombe, Tanzania in 1960. Thought It took a long time and patience, David Greybeard lost his fear of Jane and became the door into the incredible lives of the other chimpanzees of Gombe! David Greybeard was also the first chimpanzee that Dr. Goodall observed using handmade tools to fish for termites - forever redefining our relationship to the rest of the animal kingdom. In 1968, kind and gentle David Greybeard passed away but his memory lives on in the stories Dr. Goodall continues to share about him 💚

Say hi to George (he's ready for his closeup)! As an infant, George was rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and through the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), JGI's Tchimpounga Sanctuary happily received George into its care. Caregivers quickly provided George essential veterinary support and - one of the most important remedies: Love. Fortunately, he was in good health and soon George was able to be integrated with chimpanzees close to his age. Today George is best friends with another fan favorite, Kabi, and loves exploring the local forest in Tchimpounga Nature Reserve with his friends.

You can support chimpanzees like George by becoming a Chimpanzee Guardian today. Through the expert care of JGI staff, and the generous support of people just like you, Tchimpounga is a second chance for chimpanzees who have suffered.
