Mão da Glória

As a scorched relic exhumed from the burning sands of South American damnation, "Bastardizing The Holiness" marks the unholy birth of Satanicristo, a necromantic duet conjured from the ashen veins of Sarcófago, Holocausto, and Mutilator, does not simply pay homage to its storied lineage but instead it desecrates it, brandishing its own flair of blasphemy with grim determination and sepulchral force.

The sonic altar erected here shows a powerful mixture of black and death metal, but rather than merely cavort in noise, this duo does so with a well-thought melodically structure, sometimes pausing to genuflect, not in submission, but in mockery, through eerily purposeful ambient passages that seem to chant rather than play.

The production preserves the jagged edges of their fury while allowing sacrilegious textures to bloom l. It is here that the spirit of old South American metal stirs, feral, and unrepentantly direct, surging with contemptuous ecstasy, a furious reverence turned inside out, a sacred heart placed upon a pike. It evokes not sorrow, but the elation of absolute spiritual rebellion, stepping barefoot into a chapel of flames.

For those who seek sound as a sacrament of defilement, who crave sonic landscapes where the sacred is gutted and worn as a mask, this record awaits, smouldering in dusk.

Mão da Glória

From the underbelly of Osaka, emerges "Sexus-Mortem, Ouroboros", the second album by this unholy duo, Sex Messiah. This release is no mere repetition, instead , a sulphuric delirium where genres convulse and melt into each other as waxen effigies under infernal flame. Firmly rooted in the charred soil of black metal, its branches twist wildly, bearing the bruised fruits of thrash, death, heavy metal, and cryptic ambient incantations.

The album slithers through dimensions with a serpentine cruelty, often lashing with thrash's manic fervour, then collapsing into cavernous spasms that echo. The textures mutate, sometimes crude and harsh as corroded iron scraping bone, other times cloaked in fog, where whispers of dark ambient drift like miasmas through a decaying chapel. These sonic mutations call to mind the South American black/death covens of yore, yet here their savagery is distilled through a uniquely lens of ritualistic erotic violence and spiritual disfigurement.

In the end, this is a ritual, a fever, a blade slid gently across the throat of sonic orthodoxy, beckoning not with beauty, but with the allure of madness, calling forth those willing to bleed with it.

Mão da Glória

The fourth record of this solo act of MBN.

We are shown a more intense performance than the previous release, and a truly ravishing black metal record that imbues, as it is usual is by this artist, bits of punk. This comes closer to the debut demo in 2023 that takes a route quite close to what we get in Vothana, however with a great synth interplay.

Mão da Glória

In their thirteenth sonic transmission, Canadian duo Starcave Nebula cast yet another glimmering shard of spectral sound into the vast black, titled "Asterism". This cosmic artefact is a testament to their enduring commitment to charting the hinterlands of lo-fi black metal, now with glistening trails of jazz-imbued improvisation and noise-drenched abstraction.

The first track, "Asterism in Phlogopite", appears as a half-remembered dream of distant galaxies, swaying with a peculiar groove, a lo-fi pulse simultaneously hypnotic and untamed, as an otherworldly jam session suspended in vacuum, its notes drifting weightless, neither tethered to tradition nor shackled by clarity.

Then, with "Star Sapphire" the veil grows darker and more viscous. This track shows a more sombre, contemplative descent into black metal’s cavernous marrow, textured like scorched velvet, while dark ambient motifs and noise surges clash and coalesce in a struggle for celestial dominance. A glacial duality emerges: one of rawness and atmospheric blackeness, of entropy and astral yearning, as if composing a love letter to the cosmic void, written in collapsing stars.

The fusion of styles is unapologetically arcane, black metal reduced to its most primitive frequency, then rebuilt with alien intuition, not as genre pastiche but as gravitational anomalies, distorting the album’s orbit and inviting listeners to lose their bearings.

Mão da Glória

A torrential whisper of brimstone and bone begins this split, as Impurity unleashes a ritual of sonic rot. Their side, “Desecrating the Sacristy”, crawls from the crypt like a depraved incantation, as guitars rasping with ancient decay. The drums pound like martial footsteps across a desecrated sanctuary, where the bass lines sound like a hammer forging a tomb. Vocals erupt in gnarled, cavernous howls but sometimes also enter into a higher pitch mode, dripping with contempt for the sacred, as if gutted gargoyles shriek their damnation. Impurity’s war metal leanings emerge in furious, churning gallops, yet the atmosphere remains suffocatingly primitive, a blood-soaked hymn to annihilation echoing through a ruined chapel of the damned.

When Satanicristo’s “Rite of Desecration” rises from the ashes, it offers a darker, more serpentine malignancy. Here, black metal’s tendrils entwine with death metal’s guttural and guitar bile, creating a melodious blasphemy that slithers through sepulchral corridors. The riffs weave mournful minor-key melodies that collapse into thunderous breakdowns. The vocals, performed through cavernous growls sounding as if pulled from the depths of a charnel pit. Percussion rattles as nails on oak coffins, each footfall driving the listener further into the abyss.

Together, this Brazilian duo crafts a descent into desecration that feels both ritualistic and unhinged. Impurity’s track opens the fissure, an invitation to the abyss, while Satanicristo drags the soul deeper into a deeper path of hatred and reverence.

Mão da Glória

Cassette on preorder through Canti Eretici

The ninth release by this prolific Québécois solo project.

This project continues to defy expectations with “intablej' u ana”, a record that further demonstrates Alice's penchant for reinvention. Known for rarely treading the same path twice, this offering marks a return to the intricate fusion of atmospheric black metal and chiptune that was last explored on the fifth album, “alstrenm cuete uearqhanp janvalaj faruqn uaspanlq kelees aermals jyans tremaalk gavans fayerinsque ralampganas rei rnelpas”. However, the addition of synthpop influences especially in the softer sections creates a new dynamic. As such, the EP shifts seamlessly between moments of blackened intensity and serene sotfness, allowing each element, whether blackened tremolo riffs, ethereal synths, or pixelated chiptune flourishes, to breathe without overshadowing the others. The transitions between these textures feel organic, that accompany the transition from distorted growls to clean falsetto vocals, a sedimenting Alice’s ever-maturing songwriting and knack for weaving intricate emotional narratives through sound.
While the harsher, black metal-inspired sections carry the weight of despair , the lighter synthpop-chiptune moments evoke a sense of melancholy wonder, offering reprieves that are as emotionally charged as the climaxes. Percussion also plays a critical role in bridging these shifts, with dynamic, almost hypnotic rhythms that anchor the more experimental elements, but especially shining in the second track.

Despite its brevity, “intablej' u ana” is a deeply immersive experience. There is a cinematic quality to the compositions, as if each track were a vignette in a larger, unspoken story that invites the listener to traverse a spectrum of emotions, from rapture to introspection.

Alice once again proves that it is not bound by any genre rules, but also revisits past ideas while introducing fresh influences which speaks to its restless creativity and refusal to stagnate, a remarkable snapshot of an artist in perpetual motion.

Mão da Glória

In the sombre twilight of Germanic soundscapes, Grieving Bloom presents a soundscape where the chilling breath of winter dances with the languid melancholy of a spring that never fully arrives. The compilation “Clouds of May / Hands of Winter" becomes an elegiac piece, where stark post punk refrains entwine effortlessly with the shadowed echoes of black metal, flowing towards an atmosphere imbued by profound grief which speaks of days slipping quietly into desolation.

Grieving Bloom’s dualistic nature is evident through these intertwined themes, one EP evoking the stasis and desolation of winter’s grip, the other chronicling the painful, almost taunting emergence of spring, standing as a poetic musing on the passage of time; the inevitable cycles of decay and rebirth rendered through a sonic palette that is as intricate as it is haunting.

In a soundscape where black metal’s edge intersects with the introspective defiance of post punk, Grieving Bloom does not simply perform; the music becomes an expression of internal strife, an elegy for unspoken losses, and an intimate confession of solitude. The composition of these songs, painstakingly nurtured over seasons and years, resonates with the energy of a heart caught between the immutable cold of winter and the bittersweet promise of a spring that feels as distant as a dream.

Thus, this compilation is not merely an empty genre crossing but a journey through the chiaroscuro of human emotion, a tale where the sombre art of mourning becomes beautiful, and where even in the bleakest hours, there lies an undeniable allure, a desire to find solace amidst the interplay of dark winter nights and the elusive, tragic bloom of May.

Mão da Glória

The third record and the sophomore album of this Québécois trio.

This album stands as a poignant reflection on the profound and complex influence of catholicism and jesuit traditions on Québec's society, stretching from the era of New France to contemporary times.

“Sainte-Paix” delves into the intricate relationship between religion and cultural identity in Québec, engaging critically with the catholic heritage, revealing both personal and communal struggles against the oppressive aspects of religious traditions and expressing a fervent desire for spiritual and social liberation. Through its tracks, the album articulates a nuanced perspective on the historical and cultural legacy, highlighting the tension between tradition and modernity, oppression and liberation, and silence and outspoken faith.

As previously seen, this record masterfully combines the fiery intensity of black metal with the melodic and harmonic richness of folk music, creating a soundscape that is dearly beautiful. The use of folk elements adds a layer of authenticity and cultural depth, while the black metal foundation provides a powerful vehicle for their poetic and reflective lyrics. This harmonious blend accentuates the thematic tension within the album, effectively conveying the complex emotions and historical narratives explored in the lyrics.

"Sainte-Paix” is a finely woven black metal and folk record, serving as a vehicle for a poetic reflection on Québec’s historical and cultural relationship with catholicism.
Through its intricate compositions and deeply reflective lyrics, Moulin Banal offers a profound exploration of the cultural and spiritual legacy of this region, making this record a significant contribution to the contemporary Québécois blackened scene.
