Hello! I'm an Anglo-Saxonist, specialising on Britain from 400-1066. Strictly speaking, I'd narrow my special area into the early portion of this period (c.400-800), and into Old English Poetry.
However, I also make videos on other topics when inspiration strikes. These include, but are not limited to:
- Norse mythology & cultural history (Vikings, of course)
- Polynesian navigation methods
- Nuclear war plans in the UK
This is probably bad for the algorithm, but the point of this YouTube channel is to give me an outlet for the topics I read on.
I received a BA(Hons) in History from the University of Chester, and an MA in Medieval History from the University of York. A PhD is on the to do list, but it's one of those things which was a casualty of Covid.

Hey, here's a manuscript which lists and names the runes of the Old English Futhorc, with a few mistakes - about three scribes all adding and amending rune names, sound values, and Latin equivalent letters
You can look at it yourself here, it's f.11v: iiif.bl.uk/uv/#?manifest=https://bl.digirati.io/ii…

Hello! This is your periodic reminder that I'm not dead. I'm struggling a lot with creativity at the moment - I can't seem to find topics that inspire me to read or write and funnel research into something. Really, this is a non-update.
This illustration is a creature called a 'Bonnacon' - it has a head like a bull, but with inward-curving horns. "Because these horns are useless for defense, the bonnacon has another weapon. When pursued, the beast expels its dung which travels a great distance (as much as two acres), and burns anything it touches."

Royal Mail in the UK has announced a stamp collection based on British mythology and folklore - and among them is this one on Beowulf & Grendel, the part where they engage in an arm wrestling competition, because a sword fight is seen by Beowulf as much too honourable a way for Grendel to be slain. I should really revisit my video on Grendel, when time allows me!

An update for you all: I have 3 scripts which are done, sitting ready to record, but I'm unable to record at the moment (partially thanks to a nasty cold, and partially life getting in the way). Just a reminder that I'm not dead.
Picture is from the Luttrell Psalter. No idea what it is! A squid / chicken / lizard, I suppose.

sometimes, I get the feeling academics write their articles purely to fetishise their own intelligence, getting off on making it inaccessible.
I've just found an article which used the term "socio-territorial entity" rather than "kingdom", with reference to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex. It just beggars belief to be honest
