It's also raining today. It's interesting how it almost always rained on my birthday+.+ Are you guys well?
It was a shame that we couldn't meet up close from after being discharged from the military and even until this year's birthday. Thank you for congratulating me from everywhere: cafés, bus stops, subways, through SNS, various advertisements and sharing goodies.
After finishing shooting <Mine>, my first drama after discharge, I am spending busy days due to a new project, which I cannot talk about yet.
After wondering how I could send you my thanks, I decided I should write this letter as its been a while.
My parents came to Seoul yesterday and are touring the various sites where many of you have congratulated me. I too am also planning to visit these places after my schedule finishes. Thank you so much everyone. Stay healthy and let's meet soon.
This is a letter to future ‘Sergeant Hak-Yeon Cha’ from ‘recruit no. 44 Hak-Yeon Cha,’ who will be completing the training camp in 4 days. Before you know it, you will be discharged. I am curious if you will still remember the life during training camp then.
Although life at training camp was a little difficult, it felt like returning to your early 20s. Will you still remember this in time? Will you cherish the things you felt and learnt during training camp? Will you miss acting and performing on stage as you do now? There are a lot of things that I am curious about, but I will patiently wait for the answer. As decided before recruitment to study Japanese and English and to plan for travel, are you doing these well? I sincerely hope you will have grown one step.
But don’t grieve too much even if you couldn’t keep those things that you wanted to do! Because in becoming the current Hak-Yeon Cha that is writing to the future, you ran diligently towards your goals without regrets.
Actually, I felt a little bad for the Hak-yeon who was looking forward to life at training camp. I thought, “you had a tough time” and “you wanted to rest a bit.” I felt sorry as the only place you could choose for taking a break was the military. I don’t know what it was that made you to keep running forwards, but I want to say well done for your hard work.
I am half worried and half excited for how you will look when you start again after being discharged. I hope you will reflect on how you used to strictly take care of yourself before recruitment and compare this image to yourself now! The 2019 me hopes that you will always be new and always your best self. I hope you will be someone who is close to but always new to the people that likes and counts on you.
Before recruitment, you took just one step forwards in acting. And with every step you gained confidence. Through tvN’s drama, ‘Familiar Wife,’ you gained confidence and through MBC’s drama, ‘Children of Nobody,’ you became to know a little bit about acting. When you return to society after discharge, do not forget about this memory. Even if you do, I hope you remember it again.
I will say it again!! Before recruitment, you diligently kept moving forwards and were someone who knew how to look at others around you. When you go back to society, I hope you will not lose this or change. (As I imagine discharge,) I am worried if I am giving burden to you who is returning to the norm full of excitement. But as I know you, I know you will do well.
Hak-yeon! This is the beginning again. Myself who is writing the letter in 2019 is feeling really overwhelmed! I believe that you will spread and flap your wings when you go out into society. Well done until now. Good job. Thank you.
Since I saw the bright sky in a while (because of Korea’s monsoon) I wanted to deliver news to you. Actually, I applied for ‘Yeon-deung’ last week as I wanted to write, but due to the long rainy season and Covid19 the times were still difficult for everyone. I thought long and hard about if it was okay to write but I could not tell you that I met KEN at the Military Academy and was doing well. As I wrote in June’s recent letter, are you spending each and every valuable day, happy and as if is your last?
I promised KEN that if he came to the Military Academy I would cut his hair for him, but his hair was already so short that there was nothing to cut. Today, I was finally able to cut his hair. While I was cutting his hair, we talked a lot about our past memories and laughed so much. Since our trainee days until recruitment last year, we were always together as VIXX members. But experiencing new feelings is probably because of the changed circumstances for the members. The biggest change during military life is not becoming Sergeant, but as you already heard, it is probably the fact that I am living with KEN at the Military Academy’s Residence Hall. In the meantime, I had a lot of worries about this and that. But today, I realised that I did good coming to the Military early. Because if I had not come to the Military Academy before KEN, I would never have had the opportunity to cut KEN’s hair.
I will stay well and healthy until the day I get discharged. Then, I will tell you about the things that I did not get a chance to say today but really wanted to. I hope you stay well in the weather which is becoming hotter. Salute!
30th, 12:40am, I am writing this letter just as it has become my 30st birthday. After becoming Squad Commander, we are doing our duties while rotating the night shifts. I am able to write this letter as I applied for ‘yeon-deung’ beforehand. Oh! When we apply for ‘Yeon-deung’ and gain permission, we can turn on the lights after lights-out. During this time, we can study at night and also write letters. ‘Yeon-deung,’ it’s a pretty name, right?
I am writing this letter at this late hour because I really wanted to tell you about a fun incident that happened just a few moments ago. To be honest, birthdays are not so special, but still... Doing the night shift starting from the day before, over until your birthday is quite disappointing. ‘Why can’t they let me off..’ During the duty rotation period, my senior told me that he wanted to wish me a happy birthday at 12am so he purposely put me on the shift. Even though it was not a special event and there was no cake or firecrackers, I was very grateful of what he said. Happy Birthday! In that instant, I was a little shameful for being disappointed. As I returned to the Residence Hall when my shift ended, I began to have useless expectations. ‘No way would my peers at my Residence Hall be awake, waiting to surprise me! Then do I have to play with them?’ When I opened the door, everyone was pretending to be asleep. I attempted to speak to them and asked them to do what they had prepared. But, they were all actually sleeping. I was a little embarrassed. I couldn’t help but laugh when I told them to go back to sleep. Why did I think my birthday was a big deal... haha
I saw that a lot of Starlights wished me a Happy Birthday through cafe events, bus stops, subway, Big Issue and Instagram. Thank you and thank you again. I cannot prepare gifts or events at the moment as I am in the military. I don’t know if I am allowed to only receive this much when I haven’t done anything for you. Actually, I wanted to provide a small surprise event, even if it’s not a song like last year. There are times when I suddenly realize that I am in the military. I had this feeling as my birthday approached. As there is no event that I can do during the limited time that I have during my holidays and leaves, I felt sorry so I wondered what I can do to deliver my heart. So I applied for Yeon-deung and decided to tell you guys ‘what story comes into mind at exactly 12am.’ Of course I cannot deliver or show you at exactly 12am, but I wanted to share it with you. Just as a single congratulations from my senior and birthday cards in my locker from my peers can warm my heart even without an event, I hope my heart gets delivered to the Starlights. The night is getting deeper and when the day brights, I will only have 99 days left until discharge. I feel a bit shy saying this but please wait for me a little longer. When I get discharged, I will give you a surprise gift as I could not give it to you this Birthday. Until then, be healthy and stay well until we meet.
